Moving into a new house was probably the most exciting time of our live and so very busy. When we were building we took a lot of things into consideration and a big basement was a mandatory for our kids to be able to lounge, and run around while being home with their friends. Storage is such a big deal in a home and our basement took the brunt of storage and that included papers, photos, school crafted artwork and other oddities. A few months into our new home, I went downstairs for a photo album that I needed in order to complete a photo collage for a project and much to my dismay, it was crinkly, odd feeling and it felt musty and gross. How did this happen? If you are allergic to mold, despise papers that feel musty, and hate humidity in the house, I know now how to remove moisture and humidity from your house and this is my story as I lavishly living a new DIY out loud.
As you can well imagine, after picking up one photo that was weird feeling, I started into boxes, bins, books and crates and I just wanted to cry. Years of memories, damp, strange feeling and some of the items had stuck to one another from all the collective moisture. My photos were sticking together and as I would attempt to pry them they ripped! Uggg, I was just about ready to give up because I could not stop the moisture or could I? Not knowing what I was doing, I went to the store and bought dozens of those moisture buckets that offered beads that somehow turned into water and I placed them all over a very large basement area, to no avail. While this was hardly a great solution I was a new house owner and never had this problem at our old house.

Here’s the thing that I think thing that I think we all overlook: just because summer is officially over, humidity does not go anywhere, it stays. Our changing world creates above above average temperatures and precipitation that comes in the form of both snow and rain. A dehumidifiers will offer you help on a situation that plagues households everywhere. Moisture occurs differently in homes across the world, because for some moisture and humidity are in the upstairs, while for others the humidity just seems to stick to the living area on the main level. There is no one standard place that humidity attacks, but there is a standard fix and that is a quality dehumidifier!
Now in my home, our story goes a bit further, as I have children with severe asthma and allergies to mold and mold spores, which live in high humidity zones like the basement an area often overlooked by most. The purpose of a dehumidifier is to SUCK the ever-living daylights out of the moisture in an area and if there is not moisture there should not be mold growth. The key to a dehumidifier is getting the right size. Larger areas need larger portable units and smaller areas then require smaller units. Point is if you don’t buy the right size, it is futile, so know which room you are putting this in, or which living space. The DH70W is perfect for medium to large rooms like basements, living rooms, kitchens, bigger bedrooms and bathrooms where humidity just lives!
Why I Love My Honeywell Dehumidifier DH70W
The features on this particular dehumidifier are outstanding as it removes up to 70 pints in 24 hours. Now my basement is not that wet, so the 70 Pints option in a 24 hours period was the only possible choice for that area. As the moisture is sucked out of the air, it then turns into water, and the water goes into a bucket and the bucket then needs emptied. There is a smart digital humidistat control system which will automatically sense the room moisture level and then it will activate the dehumidifier to do its thing and very accurately maintain desired humidity levels.
My Honeywell Dehumidifier offers an automatic shut-off when the water tank is full, which means, when my kids don’t do their appointed chore of EMPTYING the tank, it won’t overflow, rather it stops running and waits to be emptied. (too bad we can’t get it to bark to get their attention!, lol) Did I mention that the water tank handles on the Honeywell Portable Dehumidifier are ergonomically friendly, so carrying it is not hard to do, as it fits into the palm of our hands with ease.
The filter is washable, take a look.
Here’s another little piece of info you want to know about the Honeywell Portable Dehumidifiers: if the power goes out, which rainy conditions and multiple storms often do tend to breed, don’t worry about it because if the water tank is not full and the dehumidifier was to be running and stopped because of an outage, it will automatically restart!
In our basement different areas are always being invaded by the kids, so if they are playing in one area and I have the dehumidifier there, the casters allow them to easily relocate the dehumidifier to another location in the basement with ease. There is no lifting involved. You might think this is a monster-sized machine, but you will be quite surprised by its dimensions: 15.3″ x 12.0″ x 23.6″
The Digital LED display offers soft touch controls and you can easily adjust the humidity controls in addition there is 2 Fan Speed Control. I should also mention that this uses Eco-friendly refrigerant R410A. My Honeywell Dehumidifier is ENERGY STAR-certified. Your ideal living conditions with indoor humidity as advised by the CDC & EPA are at levels of less than 50%-60%.
