What happens when you have a 17 year old daughter who has been sick so long she can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel and then suddenly a possible diagnosis is made and surgery is on the horizon? You give her a Build-A-Bear that she can love, hug and hold onto! Build-A-Bear is for every age and this is my daughter, Kallie, lavishly living health out loud!
The Tale Of The Minnie Mouse Build-A-Bear
By Kallie Vento, for Dana Vento.Com
For the past three years I’ve been battling with health issues in my stomach, test after test and hospital visit after hospital visit I lost so much hope and my sickness caused me to stay in bed. ( and yes I am totally guilty of wallowing in self-pity- because really, who wouldn’t) then my team of doctors decided to try one last test- a HYDA scan- to see if my gallbladder was functioning properly.
From Testing To Minnie Mouse
As the story goes it wasn’t and I was due for surgery on the 22nd. The day before my surgery my mom presented me with a gift in a cute little box with ribbon at the top. I was so excited I ripped it open (with no regard for the cute little ribbon- I know what you’re thinking- how inhumane… but I was excited!) and when I opened it made me so incredibly happy, even at age 17.
Inside the box was a pink, Minnie mouse Build-A-Bear and the cutest little accessories! She came with an adorable Minnie mouse shirt that was white and darling little pink and white polka dotted leggings and of course pink strappy shoes (every girls favorite accessory am I right?). So being the big, bad 17 year old that I am, I carried Minnie the build a bear into the hospital with me at 5 am, in my arms ready to take on my surgery.
Hospital Nurses Wanted My Minnie Mouse Inspired Build-A-Bear
As I walked into pre-op all the nurses went nuts complimenting me on my cute little bear. Sadly, she couldn’t come into actual surgery with me (despite my constant and I’m sure annoying, pleading). When I got out of surgery however, she was right there next to me again, which I tend to believe sped up the healing process;), but no one else agrees.
Anyways, throughout my overnight stay and my whole recovery she stuck by my side (truly a great companion) and the best part? It didn’t attack my feet every time I moved in my bed at home like my cat did! All joking aside though, receiving a gift like that, really did help me through my recovery, it really was great to have something by my side to squeeze while I was in pain (besides my poor moms hand). You never really “grow out” of the stuffed animal stage and that’s why getting this bear meant so much to me. As a 17 year old you’re known to “grow out” of things like babies and stuffed bears, but what’s great about this bear and build a bear in particular, is that they’re meant for all ages. They’re meant to help put a smile on anyone’s face because; no one wants to face anything like that alone. I really enjoyed/still do enjoy having a cute little bear by my side. Build a bear sure does know how to “build” a better day!
