Are you ready for a little bit of beautiful, and travel all wrapped up in one? You could say I am a bit obsessed with visiting both working and nonworking lighthouses. Every trip we take I make sure that I head to the lighthouses.
There is something very alluring about traveling to and visiting a lighthouse. If you happen to be in California, in Ranchos Palos Verdes, north of Los Angeles Harbor, California, you will be treated to Point Vicente Lighthouse.
The lure of a lighthouse is a bit romantic, and a bit nostalgic, as well as so darn breathtaking up close and personal isn’t it? This little trip is not a trip for those with kids under 7 because they are not permitted in the lighthouse, but it sure does make a great little ‘date’ time.
Let’s travel to Point Vicente Lighthouse in Ranchos Palos Verdes, California and lavishly live travel out loud!
Point Vicente Lighthouse
Did you know that Point Vicente Lighthouse is actually situation between Point Loma Lighthouse (which is to the South) and Point Conception Lighthouse(which is to the north)? Interest situating right?
The Coast Guard opens the Point Vicente Lighthouse to the public the second Saturday of every month, however, this is not the case in March, as that month poses an exception. March at the lighthouse is different and the lighthouse is open the first weekend of the month to coincide with Rancho Palos Verdes’ Whale of a Day Festival. Lots of fun.
Procedure At Point Vicente Lighthouse
Every lighthouse has an operating procedure. We have learned this after traveling to many lighthouses. Some require a discussion before entering, others a short film and most a fee.
Here, after signing in at the front desk you can head toward the lighthouse and climb to the top. When you get to the top you will see the rotating light and a view up and down the Palos Verdes coastline. The view will take your breath away, but make sure to start snapping those photos, they would be wonderful blown up and placed in your living room as it is breathtaking!
Right behind the lighthouse is a small museum which offers lots of great detailed information on the advancements in technology dealing with the light for the lighthouse and the invention of GPS, which has rendered lighthouses obsolete, other than their pure beauty.
This is a great adventure for you, and your friends, or for a great little date time or even families with children over 7(if you want to go into the lighthouse). You will learn a little bit of history and enjoy a view that is free.
How To Make A Day Of Point Vicente Lighthouse
If you want to make a day trip out of the visit, pack a picnic lunch and then lounge at one of the tables in the Rancho Palos Verde Interpretive Center Park, which is right next to the Point Vicente Lighthouse.
The Interpretive Center is free and offers quite a few exhibits ranging from marine life to the cultural history of the Palos Verdes peninsula. Additionally, you will find there is a special emphasis on the Pacific Gray Whale.
The Center also offers tours of the museum and leads several hikes each year throughout the Peninsula. Don’t go without planning, make sure to call ahead and see what is available. The park is open daily from dawn until dusk and the Center is open from 10 am – 5 pm. For more information check out their website
