The biggest day of your life is about to happen, you are going to say, “I Do” – but before all the vow exchanging you need to be ready to accept yourself, the photos that are about to be snapped and your daily habits. Is there room for improvement?
The stress of pulling a wedding together is tough, but putting yourself first can be even harder, so my simple tips for getting in shape before heading to the altar will help you do just that. Each person’s trip to the altar is different, as our future life goals, but one goal that you can gain is to learn how to lean on yourself before you unite and lean on your partner.
Putting one step in front of the other is only one piece of the journey that will get you to the altar but remember that you still come first and knowing yourself and your strengths will make that future partnership you are about to embark upon even better.
My Own Personal Trip To The Altar
I had never been through a more crazed time in my life. The wedding was up and coming, I was in the midst of changing jobs and not wanting to announce it to my boss. The wedding parties were large, someone just had a baby and hated my dresses (isn’t that every bridesmaid?) and the invitation list seemed to just keep growing as we headed to about 300 people.
All I could think about is what we had to do, the honeymoon preparation (we were traveling to Italy), the clothing, and all the photos. Our photographer kept pointing out the obvious: the photos we were going to be in would transport us back to the past each time we looked at them, so be prepared. My nerves just kept eating away at me. Some days I would eat a lot and other days I could not eat.
It seemed to me that I needed to get my own ‘house’ together in order to survive this large party and life. I needed inner strength, the ability to lean on myself, health time for myself to calm the anxiety down and really not bring my future husband into my little world of overload as I knew he had his own ‘stuff’ brewing. I found what I loved to do, I began brisk walking daily, during lunchtime errands at work, and eating a simple salad, and before I knew it, I was feeling more positive.
I continued on like this for the three months leading up to the nuptial exchange and suddenly a person I never knew appeared. I was much more svelte, so much so that the day of my wedding my mom was taking in my dress again under my arms. Additionally, by keeping this plan to myself, I was leaning on myself for strength. Honeymoon planning was where I did my best work, rather than grabbing clothing in the size I was in, I sized myself down by one because I knew with the effort I put forth, I would be able to fit into the other size!

Simple Tips For Getting Into Shape Before Heading to the Altar
Altar’d is all about helping brides and grooms drop weight in the form of pounds and relationship baggage before they walk down the aisle. The twist: the couples are separated to undergo their inspiring 90-day transformations solo, and the big reveal doesn’t happen until they see each other at the altar.
The couples cannot start their life together until they learn to really love themselves alone. Hosts Chris Marhefka and Erin Stutland offer up simple changes to diet, exercise and self-care that lead to big transformations for the couples on the show and can inspire you to make changes in yours too. The show is a must-watch and really brought me back to the time of my own wedding and my journey to the altar.
Here are my simple tips for getting into shape before heading to the altar and remember it all starts with two words to make these changes, “I DO!”
Simple Tips For Getting Into Shape
1 Lean on yourself – don’t call someone to ask how you look, snap a photo and let it inspire you. Others will tell you what you want to hear, that is not helpful, you know what you want, go for it.
2 Clean out the pantry, rid the junk, and start fresh with food, just like the new life you are about to enter into. Exchange junk food bags for bags of fruits in veggies in the fridge, and soda for water.
3 Daily exercise, whatever you love, hit it harder. If you love walking, walk faster, longer and swing those arms. Lift light weights to tone muscles and give yourself that hour a day to unwind and let it all go.
4 Think about your photos and how they will capture you forever after and become the photo you want and the person that is in that body will come out.
5 Rid any toxic relationships because negative energy does no one any good. Surround yourself with those that are positive reinforcement structures in your life, known as pillars of love.
6 Remember, a phone call is always nicer than a text. So, IMO, if you can’t muster up the energy to call, there probably is no real reason to text. The tip here is less use of the smartphone and more time for you.
