Being a mom of three who travels all the time has left me in some pretty precarious situations with the need for things I have not had with me. Traveling is a journey, and journeys generally require hacks to move through them! No travel will go as planned, and I can say that from years of traveling experience, both as a writer and a part of the traveling population.
We all know that necessity is the mother of invention and rather than buckling three kids up in car seats after being unpacked in a rental home or resort, or trying to replace what I forgot, I got creative. Who would believe that due to my mistrials in life, would lead to an article to help you create your own travel hacks for baby lotion?
It takes too much to get three kids up and out of our room or a rental home so I just try to make due. Making due has allowed me to curate a rather well-weathered list of travel hacks that can help anyone else that travels and forget stuff.
Today, as I lavishly live life out loud I am going to share 3 travel hacks for baby lotion that you might never have thought of or used! I have so these are tested, true and fabulous for making vacation and travel go off without a hitch!
TRAVELING AS MOM- 3 travel hacks for Baby Lotion
What I have learned after years of traveling and years of traveling with kids is that they have the best stuff in their bags and as a mom, you gotta learn how to rock those products.
Their diaper bag transitioned into little backpacks and when they don’t pack their bags anymore, I now pack baby lotion in my bag, because it works.
As a pro traveler, travel writer and someone who is has had to figure her way around things during travel, I’ve created hacks that I use. Most hacks that I know have been born from the Mother of Necessity.
You know how this works right? In a place, in a pinch and you don’t have what you need with you? What do you do? You get inventive and create a hack. Years of travel experience behind me and more in front of me, I can tell you that these are tested and true hacks I use.
Unfortunately, I would love to say that I learn from my mistakes, but I still misstep and forget things. Phone calls, last-minute meetings, or fast add-on job offers take away from my packing attention. Of course, this results in a lack of focus, which leads to forgetting something I thought I packed, even with a checklist!
3 Travel Hacks for Baby Lotion – Hacks 1-3
Rid the Hairy Beasts (legs, 5 O’clock shadow, armpits)
As you all know whether you are Mom or Dad, organized or not, you end up picking last. Scrambling around before every trip is predicted. Why? You are busy making sure the kids are packed right.
The funniest part of this is, kids would not miss what they don’t have. Unless it is the blankie, stuffed animal or their iPads. Yet, we put so much effort into them, we forget things for US! Here’s what happened to create a hack for hairy legs and facial stub (for men).
I took a look at my legs as we were unpacking and ready to head to the pool and I about screamed. All week I had meant to take care of shaving. No, I am not a hairy beast but stubble in the sun is worse than hairiness on my legs.
HACK #1 – 3 Travel Hacks for Baby Lotion
Use baby lotion as an alternative to that shaving cream you forgot to pack. In a pinch it is truly helpful and a great HACK. NO faucet needed. Slather up the leg that is in need. Then run the razor up from the ankle to the knee.
I generally use a ‘wad’ of tissues to clean off the razor or really hot steaming water, as cold water will not take the baby lotion off the razor.
*Word of caution, razors are sharp and the handle can become slick from baby lotion. Do take care to wipe your hand with a tissue before you attempt to clean the razor. Alternatively, put a tissue around the handle of the razor as you are using it.
The cluster of tissue you will use to clean the razor should be thick enough that the razor cannot get through. Do note it needs to be thin enough that you can still manage to clean the razor head.
3 Travel Hacks for Baby Lotion – Humidity and Hair
I have curly tresses, and I have frizzy hair. You might now believe it from some of the images you have seen, but it’s true. Warm weather is NOT my hair’s BFF and I have to say I have forgotten my ‘de-frizz’ bottle more than once!
If it’s a vacation, I don’t style the curls, nor do I attempt to fight them. Which means, I just go wavy and pull up all those locks of lovely waves! Unfortunately, I do like to tossel through with a wave prep. Generally, it involves sea salt spray on dry hair.
When we go out, I like to get cleaned up and feel as great as the winds blowing on me from the hot tropical sun, but without frizz containment I just am miserable. Often if I don’t at least tame it, I look like I just woke up. That’s not how I present ever.
HACK #2
A trick I taught myself years ago, was to pull out the baby lotion. By no means do I use a lot, because it can weigh my hair down, but a little does the trick.
The clean, fresh smell of Baby Lotion is just one of the great perks of using this hack. However, it is not just about that fresh smell wafting about, it’s about a game changer!
I rub a dime-size amount of lotion into the palm of my hand. Next, I rub it through my hair, from the underneath first. To do this, I point my head to the floor and work underneath, scrunching as I go. It works fabulously.
Following that with the remaining portion on the top of my hair/head from the top down. However, there is very little left at this time as to not Weight it down and look oily. Goodbye frizz and hello to soft and shiny hair that is so much less frizzy!
The best place to try this experiment on your hair is a pool day. Why? It will wash out so if you have added too much, it will just come out after swimming. Next time apply less or more as needed.
Polyester and Nylon Nightmares
While I am not going to bash material that packs without issues, I’ll leave it at, this material is not a woman’s best friend. It’s beastly, uncomfortable, and makes you sweat like a mutha. I don’t care who you are, it is a heat packing nightmare.
The only thing I like about anything polyester is that it can be rolled into a ball and still look like a million bucks when you unroll the packed wad.
Polyester anything in my book is King of Cling and cling and dryer heat makes it a static nightmare. What results is a material that sticks to your clothing because polyester just has this love-hate relationship with every article of clothing?
Tame this beast of a nightmare. OK? But how you ask? Just know this, it is not fashionable if it is sticking to you, cause you are writing the book of ‘What Not to Wear!’
HACK #3
Clothing static cling will disappear if you use Baby lotion True fact because my mom taught me this early on, and I’ve always been successful using this HACK. First, you should know that a little goes a long way.
Also, you may have to reapply per leg of pantyhose, spandex pants atop the tummy portion, etc. Start with just a quarter-sized amount of lotion.
Squeeze this drop of lotion into the palm of your hand and rub your hands together. Almost like you are applying the cream to your hands but don’t put it between the fingers.
The idea is you don’t want the lotion to show on your hands. However, you want your hands freshly ‘moistened’ from putting this on.
Now, you will work from the inside of the Polyester Prince of clothing piece and rub it down from the top to the bottom. You could also do this from the outside of the pantyhose, leggins, etc.
Simply, put the baby lotion between your hands. Work from the waistband, and roll it back and forth like you are extending bread in between your hands. Move to the bottom.
Do note: if you put too much lotion on your hands, it will show on the material. Think black is suddenly the new pink. Fatal application error. Try to do more with less. Done right, static electricity won’t be clinging anymore.
Polyester will have met its match. This is true for those nylon pieces as well. While this clothing is great for packing, it needs a little help when styling, so beware of the cling!
Snag, Snag, Snafu
There’s no one I have ever met that loves when their skin snags against something. It’s a dry feeling, uncomfortable and aggravating. You can, however, change this when you travel!
First, after flying or changing elevations, and travel of any kind, your hands seem to be the first thing to dry up. Hangnails and dry skin are not compatible with some clothing. You want to apply baby lotion to your hands after any trip to a ladies room, where you have washed your hands with soap and water.
Also, if you use a lot of sanitizers while traveling you are drying your skin. Time in the air wreaks havoc on skin conditions as well as different elevations, sand, snow, well you get the idea.
Bonus Hack #4 – As if you need any more inspiration?
Why? Later in your trip, when you go to put on your slinky, favorite black dress, your hands could be dry and snag it. Additionally, if you are on a trip for business and need to put on those polyester stockings, you are sure to snag the pair of hosiery with you.
Keep your hands moisturized as you travel. Trust me, when you put your mittens on and they don’t feel like sandpaper, or when you touch your silk scarf and it does not get a snag, you will understand. Stay ahead of issues while traveling, and it can be stress-free and happy!
Purchase a small bottle, a trial size pack or single and make sure to get a large bottle for home! Always toss one in your bags, to keep a travel hack option with you.
In fact, I just leave on in the piece of luggage I have for my trips since I take the same bag every time! Lavishly live travel out loud with my easy hacks to combat static cling, hair frizz and shaving ease!
