Winter is a time when a lot of us want to slow things down, but don’t let the cold temperatures keep you in, instead stay active during the winter.
I’ve got some great family activity ideas to get you outdoors without making it feel like exercise!
Do You Know How To Stay Active During the Winter?
The truth in that statement is that most of us do know how to stay active during the winter and sometimes we do it without knowing.
But we also do something else during the winter that contributes even further to the point that we need to stay active during the winter: we spend a lot of indoor time during the holidays, eating and drinking!
We need a balance of activity and food, not just food!
But there’s more to just doing it, it’s often better to get active as a family as you will have more fun together than alone and you will make family memories while you all stay active during the winter together!
All you have to do is get outside and enjoy the weather, and pick those outdoor activities that you all love!
Remember, winter comes but once a year, and the memories you make when you stay active during the winter as a family last a lifetime.
Bundle the kids up, get your boots on, and don’t forget your hat and gloves!
5 Fun Activities To Help You Stay Active During the Winter
1. Go Sledding
Sledding is always a blast with family and friends by your side.
If you’re on a budget, it’s also an activity that doesn’t break the bank.
Sled travel takes a surprising amount of muscle, which has the potential to get your blood pumping from all the added excitement!
But, best of all, you get an excellent cardio workout from walking up and down big, snowy hills, even if it’s only for a few hours.
2. Try Ice Skating
Ice skating is an activity that works a lot of muscles you probably forget you have.
If your family is new to the sport, no worries!
Most rinks have skates you can rent out for the duration of your outing, as well as safety bars to hold on to for a better balance experience.
3. Plan a Snowball Fight
There’s nothing like a good old-fashioned snowball fight to get the family outside and active, right in your own backyard.
Hosting a full-out family brawl, complete with a pre-made stockpile of snowballs, snow barricades and forts takes a little effort.
The good news is everyone will have so much fun, they won’t even notice how intense of a workout they’re experiencing!
4. Build an Igloo
Depending on how extravagant you want your igloo to be, you can turn the building process into an event that takes a few hours, all day, or even a few days to accomplish.
Plus, it’s another fun activity that your family can do right at home.
You can even go as far as making blueprints or looking online for cool igloo layouts to build.
Or check Pinterest for great ideas, it’s got so much information you are sure to find a good build!
5. Go on a Winter Walk
Going for a walk with your family during the winter months is a fast and easy workout.
Just be sure to bundle up before you go!
By the time you are done exercising you will for sure have worked up a sweat and I bet you will be peeling those layers of outdoor clothing off for reprieve!
6. Bonfire + Movies
We love doing movies outdoors and when you bundle up and head out, you can appreciate a new movie theater with outdoor seating!
Build a bonfire, gather the kids and have them gather the wood, and help you to set up, this way everyone is active, and then you can all relax!
7. Build Snow People
Call it snowman building, snowwomen, snowpeople, just do it!
Grab an outgrown hat, shirt, and gloves, have the kids shop outdoors for sticks and trim for the snow people’s faces and build a snowman.
Bending, stretching, rolling the snow into huge snow balls is a workout!
In the end, you get to admire your final product until the sun melts it away!
These are simple ways for families to stay active in the winter.
