Life in our house has been kicked up a notch when we decided to add Bella the Cat to our home last year. I am not quite sure who the kids chased around, hung out with, shared those special secrets with or gave all those extra hugs to but I know one thing, we love our Bella.
Bella is our Tuxedo Cat, and she is only about 9 pounds big, and she often acts as though she is a dog. She does not know mean, she is sweet all the time, and she is everyone’s best friend. Each person has their special ‘thing’ with her, and there is never a day when I don’t hear a story about the cat from one of the kids! We lavishly live life out loud with our cat each day, who brings smiles to our faces and love to our arms. Do you know though that you need to do a few things to keep your physical, social, mental and emotionally adept?
As for their physical needs, some like to be held and some do not, you will be the best determiner of what your cat likes personally, but there are other physical needs you can meet without even knowing your cat. A great set of grooming tools from nail trimmers, to brushes. Our cat loves to be brushed, she purrs all the way through. At the beginning she was not a super fan of being brushed but now she succumbs to it with ease and a few treats(lol). We use a special Furminator and she loves it and I personally love all of the hair it hauls off of her so it is that much less that is in my home! We also keep a slew of toys that help her chase and hunt. My most favorite, her milk rings. These cost nothing and she runs, fetches and brings back, just like a dog, it is so funny. We also make sure she gets to the vet for her once a year check up.
Mental stimulation is just as important to Bella and for this we use a laser pointer, and wow does she love this. It is so inexpensive and the fun she has is priceless. Bella engages for about 1/2 hour plus at a time, as we turn it on and off and she chases the light and runs to the wall, all over the carpet, opens doors and just has fun, searching and hunting for the light. As a little treat, we put some catnip in her Stargazer and she goes crazy for it as that offers her a little bit of the outdoors without going out. Finally, we keep a jar of treats, with her name on it and when she comes when she is called, plays fetch, is lovely during grooming, or just comes around we offer her treats for being such a great friend!
Social is a bit different. Here we make sure her litter box is large enough to keep her happy, fresh and clean and that the litter is maintained and fresh! We have a pet carrier and when we go out, she comes out in the carrier(she is not an outside cat), but she loves the ability to see the world from her carrier. We also have a cat stroller, we love this and so does she. Anytime I do yardwork I bring her out and she has a seat up front to the best outdoor scenes ever, yet safely nested away.
How do we keep Bella emotionally satisfied? We offer her cat furniture for scratching(she has her own post and pad, tents all over the place to hide in and baskets that she has taken over. We also have a great bed for her, that is warm and furry and able to be washed. Plenty of treats that are helpful to her tartar control and furball control(so we are helping ourselves as well) and space when she needs it. The kids understand that she needs her naps in order to be the wonderful little furball that she is and when she meows at them, they know it is time to let her alone.
We lavishly and gratefully live life out loud with our Bella. There is nothing more rewarding than when your cat follows you room to room and wants to be part of your life. The joy she has brought to our life is priceless and we like to make sure we are meeting all of her needs.
