The task of cleaning up a litterbox is hardly a lavish or luxurious task, but getting rid of those little stink turds that are left in that mix is a must, so really it does relieve the stank factor! How unpleasant is the smell of a room after a kitty goes poo? Trust me it is something you don’t want to find out, so you want a reliable litter box and some really great smelling litter!
Never would I have imagined that a little kitten could smell so awful, but a litter box is just the beginning step to keeping that smell at bay. It really does matter how you tend to the litter and the cleaning, which leads to a fresh box and a pleasant smelling environment. There are litter boxes that are small, large, decorated, tents and then there are motorized litter boxes and you really have to know what you want before you buy it.There is no such thing as lavishly living life out loud with an automatic litter box, you need to clean your own litter box. I do think the phrase clean up your own “x#$%” applies to this story rather well!
We purchased a self-cleaning litter box because I thought it would be fairly simple as well as reliable to use. Maybe I put a little too much faith into technology or maybe cats just don’t like things that are automatic, but whatever the answer is, this may not be your most ideal box to deal with the litter cleaning process!
The LitterMaid Elite Mega has not made an an incredible difference in lessening ‘poop scooping’ and odor! I would highly suggest that if you cat/kitten is skiddish in any way, to look at basic litter boxes because the self-cleaning litter boxes may agitate the cat/kitten too much. Here’s the deal, you need electric in the area where the litter box is and if the cat jumps across the plug-in, it will pull it out or if you forget to plug it in, obviously it will not work. We were away on a 2 day trip and the power went out, thank goodness we had someone checking in our on cat because the smell coming from that box was atrocious, as the power did not reset and there was no AUTO clean up then, it was all manual, gag and scoop(our poor cat-sitter)
Initially, Bella got very upset each time we allowed the machine to automatically ‘rake’ the litter box, but as time has progressed, a few weeks, she stands there and actually observes from the outside as her litter box is freshened automatically. Here is why we switched to a self-cleaning. The whole things makes a bit of noise, and really left out kitten/cat uneasy. Bella is not a skiddish cat, in fact when I print, she is the first one to the printer to see what is going on and I run vacuums all over and she comes a long, so it is just this litter box that upset her.
The first time I had to clean up after our kitten I thought I was going to puke from the smell, I am not blessed with a strong stomach and the smell is more than pungent. I can’t believe the stench that came out of her doodles. There is nothing fun about cleaning up a litter box and honestly, no matter what litter box you buy you will need to clean it out somewhat.
Here’s why the Littermaid Fails to Function Properly
The Littermaid automatically rakes and scrapes the doodle into a container that seals shut(at least it is supposed to). If your cat is like mine, she will investigate a little bit and she will successfully get the box to open, trust me, cats are smart. Well, there is the first problem, the trap does not shut and the smell is horrible. IF you do get the door to stay shut and the cat not to play with the closed door, then the next step is getting her to not gnaw on the container itself, or jam toys under the litter box(milk rings) and constantly try to get them back as this will end up in a problem as well.
In theory and with an unfilled litter box this works well, but……. it was not working. Pee clumped hard and the rake could not get passed it, therefore it did not get scooped. The litter must be topped off and high in order for the rake to get to it and the mess that it leaves on the top of the ramp, once it is up there is also something to contend with, I would rather Bella just bury her poop herself and me just scoop and clean.
Now, every-time that trap door opens where all the other poop is, a large, wafting odor of crap is let out and the smell is atrocious, as it is accumulated and that little charcoal filter that is provided hardly kicks the smell of poop, trust me, it is over-the-top awful!
There is a programmable digital timer that lets the rake sit at rest for up to 9 hours, and then it will automatically start to clean for a fresh ‘waste’ surface. The litter tray itself is detachable which is a godsend for easy cleaning. You will find sides that are high enough to not worry about spraying on the outside of the box. Now if your cat is like ours, there will be some residue that gets on the rake and that is easily taken care of, because the rake is removable and it is stainless steel, so just clean it up and put it back! The rake is a pain in the but to clean, I would rather just clean a shovel, but the rake will need cleaned like a comb and then replaced because the poo and pee do tend to clog up the teeth. (ewwwww!)Yet another fun job from a self-cleaning box.
The Ramp From Hell!
My favorite feature of this particular Litter Box is the fact that there is a Paw Cleaning Ramp because it has saves me so much time from vacuuming up–NOT! The tray is detachable and Bella knows this, so when she feels like it, she whacks away at it with her paw, dislodges it and anything that was in the carpet grooves is now all over the floor and here is another little tidbit. Our friend also got this, and see the white lip in there? That lip is the area where the poop is stored, when it is auto swished in, well, her cat, took the ramp off and clawed his way into the plastic and they put the ramp on without looking and there was a hole, and the smell just kept on, kept on! Yeah, you see the problem here? So as cutesy as it is, it is just as cute for them to just toddle on out of the box by a leap!
You do have to maintain good hygiene and change the litter weekly so there is no real AUTOMATIC to this. That being said, scraping poop on a daily basis seems to be key, and there is nothing automatic about this. There is no magic formula in cleaning up a litter box unless of course you hire someone to do this. Your magic is getting that smell out of your house as fast as you can or buying a really strong cat litter! This is not the lavish way to clean up a kitties pee and poo, rather it is more work than the price is worth. I would simply buy a nice litter box without any bells and whistles and clean it daily, saving you the time and money of figuring this whole set up out and then having it fail. Here’s to lavishly living life out loud with a cat named Bella and cleaning up your own “#[email protected]!”
