If you know me, you know one thing I am not is afraid of change, so if you notice things are moving around on my site, changing up or even looking just a tad bit better, well It’s Spring Cleaning! For years, I had struggled to get my own style, do my own thing, and have endlessly been influenced by what PR firms might offer, of particular brands, but you know what, I am so over it! My background is extensive, and I have worked with some of the biggest brands out there as well as PR Firms. In the end, what is important to know, is that I have just stayed true to myself. When PR Firms kept telling me, “You are not Frugal” I agreed, because my thought on that most debated word was, “frugal is getting the best brand for the best price and then lavishly living it out loud!” so fast forward and I am my brand, I am me. The Drama –
Cleaning up all the old posts, is really a way to stir a few memories, some good, some bad. I Look back at the products I began reviewing, who in the heck would use a bungee on their phone to keep it connected to their body and did it really sell? Poor bloggers, we get all the good, bad and evil before all of you and if it does not work, in my life, it hits the can and never hits the screen for your to read. Trust me for every great PR firm out there, there are twice as many bad reps, with bad deals and those that expect you to represent their products and work for free, after all that is what a blogger does right? For every great product, I write about, know this, at least 10x that amount has hit the trash because I don’t believe in wasting your time on junkie products that fail every possible test, I tell the truth.
A Very Mean Deal
I could have packed up just as quickly as I started and here is an example of online bullying. Long ago a new website had never been on television, never received the fanfare they wanted, but I was being asked to discuss things on local stations and quoted in magazines and this site was getting so upset. I am sorry they did not take Marketing 101 on how to put yourself out there or how to create content, but I had been and I had become noticed. The owners of the site, got upset, felt that I was a bad apple, threatened me to go away, that I was not allowed to coupon blog, and I was not allowed to right about grocery store deals, shoe deals or anything and I should close up and get out. Well, turns out, that is what they did, because the site could not get the darn job done, but their mean notes kept on flying into the inbox, and I just shucked them off.
The News Person
There is one news person that was sent to cover a piece I was in, this reporter absolutely refused to speak with me, because this person felt that I was a coupon blogger(and we were talking coupons) and this reporter did not think I had enough ability to talk into the microphone because apparently that took talent beyond a Masters Degree in Presentation(you know the one I have!) I had been contracted to speak on behalf of the company, coached by their legal as to how to present properly and the reporter refused in fact, making such a stink they had to use a PR Manager that was on scene to get the reporter under control. The decision, not to do the television piece, they simply called and arranged a different interview– this sap still reports but has been caught in some awkward Twitter moments(insert foot into mouth is all I can say)
The Blogger Advice
What if I had just listened to all those Drama Mommas that tried to stop me from writing years ago?
Far away in a different part of the US was a blogger we will just call Sally(real name withheld) Sally felt that she could make a difference in my blogging life and the internet brings all the crazies together(sure, I am including myself in this, I must be to be in this business right?). Well Sally created a group, brought a girl in from Chicago, someone in from Philly and a few others from California and before you knew it the fur was flying, the claws were out and when she told everyone that we could make money, well, look out!
First off, she introduced us to a coupon affiliate, never told us, nor did we know(remember this part was all new) that she was making money each time we signed up! Then, after we signed up, she advised us to copy their photos, and just use their bandwidth. Some of us(me) had principles we stuck too and NEVER did what she said, rather we read, made sure it was all legal and figured out own way around using other’s stuff, like creating our own.
The group maintained a while until the one girl decided to let everyone know she had been contacted to REVIEW(OMG did someone say the R word) a product. Well, how did she get and we did not, etc. etc. etc. and the first lock out came on the Facebook Group. Then another person decided to tell us that they had shared our info with PR Firms and gave our home numbers, etc. because we had all exchanged. Uggggg. As it ended the girl from Philly was giving out all our personal info to so many places and selling lists(as the group got bigger), the girl from Chicago was stealing contacts from a private list the owner had made(ugggg) and a few others were fighting and telling girls what they thought of them on a daily basis making it ugly. I sat quiet like a fly on the wall, until the day I found out that someone was screen shotting all of our private conversations, and then I had to burst. I left the group, blocked it all out and swore off the entire experience. Another girl told us she signed us all up to write a Free Post on each of our blogs, because she thought we would not mind her getting a free product at OUR expense of work. ENOUGH the blogger drama was just too outrageous and it was not supposed to be about other people, blogs were a work of your own, unless otherwise contracted!
Evolution – It’s Dana Vento
Can you tell this was just not headed in the right direction? This is the light of everything. In the end, I figured my way to the good side, created a few good friendships that have lasted. I have watched so much happen from internet to social media to blogging and it is all still evolving. One thing I know is my brand DanaVento only aligns with great brands, products, places and things that are tested, true and are good all the way around(to the best of my working knowledge) My site requires no memberships, no likes on Social Media(though LIKES and Follows would be appreciated), but my site does require a person who is interested in what I am: Travel, Fashion, Food and Life, pretty generic yet a great way to know if our stars align right? So, as I clean up for spring I invite you to bookmark my site or subscribe to my site and any of my social media channels, so you can keep up with what is going on, where to vacation, travel to, eat at, what appliances and gadgets to use, fun recipes to make, new clothes, fashion, and life in general as mine is wild and ever-changing. Happy Spring and thanks for reading! Tune in for all the fun, changed and evolution of Dana Vento, life is about changing up and keeping it fresh, and I am all about embracing it .. Dana Vento
