Oh My Gosh, look at her precious little face, I just can’t resist snuggling with her. This is My Bella, you all know her, but if you are new to my blog, this is my 9 pound little Diva! She’s sweet, lovable and she is just like one of our kids! Going away on vacation is really hard, and I can hardly look at her face and not feel bad, but when you know HOW TO HIRE a pet sitter, things run a bit more smoothly!
We were in need of a pet sitter, we had never had a pet before, and I was not putting our kitty in a kennel as that was really not a viable option for her. We had recently rescued her and just got her used to living out of a cage and quite comfortable, I was not putting her back in one. Here we were, left trying to find a pet-sitting service that actually showed up for a job they were contracted for, as I lavishly lived life struggling to find a way for our Bella the cat to be watched and comfortable! This is my story!
Nothing agitates me more as a consumer than a person who claims to offer a service when in reality they really rather not work the service they are in. I dislike quotes that don’t give pricing and I don’t like when people say they could come to your area, but really don’t have any intention of doing so. Step up, grow up, provide your price and then have the kahoonies to fess up and say you really don’t want the job, and that you are just saying you do because you don’t know how to say NO! You are not helping a consumer who is looking for a service, you are deterring them from moving on with a false hope that your lame business might be able to help in some way! As a consumer we stop looking for help and become dependent on a not-real solution! Meet Pet-Sitters who really are not pet sitters and they don’t know their territory, or prices. I have been shopping for a pet sitter and it’s scary what interviews have gone on my phone and home! If you can’t get a quote, and they are not insured, move on!
I have learned so much about kittens, cats, pets and having a new addition to our family, a sweet little kitten! What I can tell you is that reliable help for pet-sitting is hard to find and that a good pet-sitter is worth their weight in gold! I have been interviewing pet sitters and finding out that a good pet sitter is hard to find. Let me help you figure out how to qualify a sitter and how to kick them to the litter box!(lol)
Remember, just because someone loves animals and has pets does not qualify them as the perfect pet sitter!
Consumers all over our great nation need sitters, as do Pittsburgh Consumers and I am already finding out that a few of these so called sitters are farces and their reality is kind of in ‘la la land’, so check them in with a good set of questions and show them your knowledge before they take your pet and make some messes that may never get straightened out! I don’t do fake promises, or, “woulda, could-a, should-a” as I am a straight up, tell me how things are gonna work kind of girl! How do you find a sitter that is great versus a pet sitter that should be shoveled out with the cat dong? Simple, follow these guide lines and you wont’ have a bad experience, but the person on the other side might actually find out you know a thing or two about what to expect!
Google Maps and Pet Sitting
When it is requested of you to provide your mailing address for their information and pricing and then suddenly they write back and ask you where you live, it might be your first hint they are not the brightest light bulb in the batch. I just sent you my address you mean you can’t Google Direction it or use your GPS to find it? What kind of business are you running? I know I am running FAR away from you! Don’t exchange cell numbers until you are sure the person is not a crazy person that now has your text number!(trust me on this).
The Friend Of A Friend Sitter
Or there might be the sitter that tells you that they can help, and then suddenly, they pawn you off on another person that is just their ‘friend’ and not an employee of the company. So it would be this scenario: I hire pet sitter A to help me, and they hire pet sitter B to take over. Pet Sitter B is not part of their company nor are they are insured and suddenly your house is an open pit for who know what. The person you interviewed is not the person coming to your home and you are a wide open target for burglary. DO you think I am kidding? Find out how many pet sitters out there do this and you will be alarmed.
Pet Sitter With Car Magnet
Now let’s take a look at the fact that your Pet-Sitter drives a car with a Magnet on it announcing to the world you are gone. Are they setting you up for burglary? Well, think about this: your car is normally in and out how many times in a day? Your lights are on in which rooms when? Suddenly you are gone and there is a car in the driveway stating, “PET SITTER”, do you think the person watching your home with a magnet on their car is alerting the neighborhood thief that they can break in and have a party? I do and it happens!
Here is how to counteract all that smelly poo that could happen when you hire wrong, hire RIGHT the first time! Price per visit will vary as pet sitters can charge anywhere from $10-25 per visit and what exactly do you get for that price?
The Cat Litter Box
If I had a dream sitter she/he would change the water and food and wash and dry each bowl out for my little Bella. I would want them to spend some time with her, not just fly in and out giving water and food, but actual love, after all that is what I am paying for! Definitely would want the litter box changed, I mean after all, if they don’t change the litter box it is like having poop in the toilet without being flushed for a day at a time and that would just suck! How would the pet sitter like a dirty toilet? Find out, ask them how they would like it, let them know your standards!
While the litter box is scooped out, it also needs freshened so my expectations would be some litter replenishment daily as well. If you have asked for this in your service you might also get, newspaper and mail brought in as well as trash cans. My simple request would be 20 minutes of play time. Think about the impending weather: blizzards, ice, etc and will they be able to get to your little darling each day or will your pet be stranded if there is an ice or snow storm? Plan ahead and don’t hire someone who has to drive across town, rather than across a block or road.
Make sure to let the pet sitter know if the lights should be left on or off, as well as the music, television and alarm. Set the expectations and make them know how serious this is, which professionals already know! Remind them about the door locking and alarm setting as well as leaving a Credit Card number with the vet for emergency use, just in case. Make sure you have a leash and pet carrier ready and at the door for ease of use, just in case and that the pet sitter has your phone number. You should also have the number of the pet sitter in case you want to reach out!
Now, as everyone is in need of instruction and help in new places, make sure to work the keys to the door with him/her(pet sitter) the first time and that they can run your alarm as well(if you have one). This is your little ‘child’ you are leaving at home, so think how you would think with a babysitter and pre-plan for everything! Finally, what do you do if the pet sitter gets sick while she is on pet-sitting duty? Who is she going to hire and how will you know that your little pet is fine? Are these people coming in your home? Are these sitters insured, etc?
A prepared pet parent is ready for anything! You need to plan ahead as though you are leaving a child behind. This member of your family is just as important as the others and you need a clear, plan to help them survive your travels as well. In addition you don’t need your vacation being announced to the world, so make sure to find a discreet, confidential sitter. There are several questions that must be asked and just because someone likes animals does not make them the perfect pet sitter, credentials and a contract do!
Lavishly living out loud and looking for a pet sitter is not easy, but when you find a good one, pay them well, reward them and your little Bella or Jake, Jack, John, Sara, Cookie, etc will be happy too! Remember there are some pet sitters for hire that need put out with the cat litter, because their attitude is poo!
