Come on we all have them, you know the neighbors that only open their blinds to see what delivery is coming, what the UPS guy is dropping off or what you are unloading from your vehicle? It’s always fun to write about personal experience, but only when I hear the same stories from my friends. The other night, my girlfriend was telling me about her neighbor who kept opening their blinds to see what was happening at their house and then suddenly when she came home from work not long ago, she saw a garage, finished almost exactly like hers. The neighbor does not talk to them, never asked them questions, but out of curiosity my girlfriend walked up to the contractor who was working for them and asked how they had decided on that particular layout… the answer will astound you: “they showed us photos of a house, we guess across the street from them….” it was my girlfriend’s house, that had been iPhone photo’d while they were working and they never knew, until she saw photos of her and her husband in the garage working. This goes on all over the place but no one really talks about it except in their inner-circles, but today, I feel like talking about it, because it is not an isolated thing and in some cases it is just shocking how intrusive people can be.
When we initially moved in, we had no idea that everyone would watch everyone else’s business, who in the world has time? I missed 13 firetrucks responding to a fire 8 doors up, because I was vacuuming and cleaning so you can see how little I pay attention to. The first time we had a nosy neighbor sighting was the most amazing and odd situation. My parents came over with a new grill for our new home and they unloaded it off the truck. 2 streets away, lived someone my children had played with here and there, though I would hardly call us all ‘friendly’. Nonetheless about 15 minutes into the installation in our garage, was a knock at the door(garage). The garage door was 1/2 way up and ‘Buffalo Head’ as her husband called her was inquiring as to what we got in the box. “I see you all had something wheeled up to your garage and I had to come and see what you all got!” Wait, there are 2 rows of homes between the streets, was she watching through binoculars? In utter amazement, I escorted her back to her car, and told her, “it would be great to catch up some other day, today my family is here.” A nosy neighbor?
I thought that would end the nosiness, but this time, Buffalo Head’s husband appeared for yet a different weekend, and he did not drive down, he actually biked over. My husband had pulled into the driveway, waiting for my a few people that were helping us to move something into our home, and as he was waiting, hanging with a drink, down came the same neighbor, but this time the husband. “Hey bud, what you got in the box?” Interrupted by our help arrival, my husband simply said, “hey see ya later” and that was that, but again in utter disbelief that anyone would have time to stare at someone’s house I kind of put up the sensors and made sure that all the cameras stayed on for the alarm at all points in time. Surveillance is probably over-kill at this point, but weird experience. Do you think this is a nosy neighbor at this point?
Deciding to have a bit of fun with this nosiness, and having discussed it with my husband ahead of time, I simply cleaned up the garage, with the door down one day, took my car out of the garage, and placed it in the driveway. The garage needed cleaned and honestly I had to do nothing special to make this happen, because I would not have gone out of my way for this. My husband was on his way home and he backed in only part way. Trap set, and when he came in, we did what we normally do, caught up on the day, the kids, etc. Suddenly, there was a knock on the garage door, and well let’s just say the Venus Fly Trap caught Buffalo Head! “I just had to come see what you all were doing, your cars were not in the garage and we thought you had something fun going on or something new coming!” As I greeted Buffalo Head, I now just felt bad for her, she was so worried about everyone else that she actually could not see that she was annoying and a bit on the obnoxious side. “As you can see, we are doing nothing, and thank you for being the most nosy person I have ever met and cheers!” I toasted her with a glass of wine, and accompanied her back to her car. I guess she found that funny because she giggled but I can tell you she has never come back down when we have deliveries, or are unloading. My girlfriend swears she is probably now taking photos of everything we do, and that is having fun with the nosy neighbor!
