I am not an over-protective mom, I just watch what my kids do, but after reading this story, you will see that no matter how hard I have tried, life just kind of gets ahead of parenting. For a while I thought that there was a curse on us each time that we shopped at our local Target, as misfortune occurred though it has nothing to do with the store! I do keep my kids with me, I don’t let them roam the store and I make sure that they are not running everywhere but honestly, with three kids, carts that don’t fit all the kids at once and their ages, shopping posed a serious challenge. With 14 years of shopping with kids in tow, I feel rather experienced and able to pass on my mommy skills of shopping to serve as a reminder: not only have we all been there, done that, stuff happens within the blink of an eye! Here is how to keep the season merry, and bright and keep those kids safe!
I just have to stop and laugh and then say, “Happy Holidays to you!” This is the season for the wary, the over-worked and the over-tired parents who try to survive and yet can the sparkle season bring any sparkle to us? As you are rushing around grabbing those most needed items, remember if your kids are with you, keep them safe! Load the kids up, take them to the store, shop till you drop but SHOPPER beware if you have kids with you danger is lurking everywhere! After having 3 kids and going everywhere together all the time, the holidays seem to be the hardest season to shop, function and come out of without an injury. I have had plenty of mishaps and some of which could have been unavoidable, but one thing is for certain, our local Target knows us well(lol) wait till you see!
We took off for a shopping trip just a few years back and within 5 seconds(literally) into the adventure at Target my child was injured and in need of the hospital. We had not even gotten into the store and my boys ran ahead about 2 feet while I got a cart and the next thing I saw was blood and a bunch of employees gathered around my son who was bleeding from his head which he hurt on the merchandising racks! Oh the nerve of those clothing racks being in the way of my precious baby(lol). To make matters worse, a complete stranger had taken notice of my daughter who had cowered to another area away from the scene of madness going on and this lady said,” I will take your daughter and meet you at the hospital!” I grabbed her, and then decided we had an injury and a need for the hospital. Forget quickness of getting to a hospital, we had to fill out a report that required my license and other information! Consider that the holiday shopping trip that never was! Watch your kids, the racks and all shelving as it poses a danger to children as well as to your sanity! Don’t let the kids climb up and into the racks, don’t let them sit on the shelving as it could collapse and watch when they are on those end caps because it is eye level and could hurt their faces! Kid shoppers beware.
When you are in a store, remember a shopping cart is just as deadly as a car, watch where you are driving that sucker and don’t let you kids steer. Did you know that over shopping cart accidents are responsible for cuts, scrapes, and broken bones? It’s true and your kids can get really hurt from hanging on the side of a cart! While it might seem cute to have your kids hanging onto the cart as you troll through the stores, the carts are not tip proof and a cart can tip over very easy! Kids are head-heavy and can fall out of the cart and hurt their heads and their fingers can get smashed in the opening where carts stack! As a mom I have to tell you that 2 of my 3 children sustained injuries in stores from a cart and I felt like a crime committer before it was all done as my license was needed again for an in store report- it was an utter nightmare!
As if all the previous trips were not bad enough, I took yet another trip to Target(oh yes, they know us and they run when they see us coming), and my son was so taken by something he saw on an end cap that he was sitting in the back of the cart(yep, I let him) and he stood up(huge mistake) and fell out, head first! Don’t judge me, I am a mom, with three kids and there are no carts that could hold all three so I did what I could do and shoved him in with the groceries and figured he would be buried! All moms do that right? Little did I realize that an M&M display on an end cap would steal his heart and his head as he toppled out of the cart and again, Target employees flying to help us and a report needed filed and of course off to the hospital for stitches! Hooray and Happy Holidays. Moral of the story— Don’t let your kids sit in the back of the cart because they will fall out!
Fast forward to yet another fun holiday outing and guess where we were? Did you guess Target? We spend half of our natural life in ‘le target'(pronounced, tar jay)! I was attempting to get shoes for my one son, while I had the other in a cart. The cart was parked next to me and of course I was meeting resistance from my little one trying on shoes. It was just the perfect time to have things go really wrong and my little one wandered out of the cart(leaped I guess to the try on stool) and we had no idea where he went. Target went on code yellow or code red( I really can’t remember and they began searching the store for him. They were looking in luggage and low and behold, somehow he had gotten in the backroom looking for a bathroom(and he wore diapers!) I think I deserve mother of the year for surviving my Target Era. I could just have easily replaced my story with yours I am quite sure as moms, we all have things go haywire during this busy, bustling season, but the bright side, is we survive! These stories take place in stores all around the world, not just Target, we just happen to shop there a lot! Needless to say, watch your kids, all of them while you are shopping as it is really easy to get distracted and kids move quick and a seat belt in the cart is no match for little boys and girls that are curious!
