When you discuss your college education with others do you find yourself saying, “life got in the way?” For many of us, life just started moving really fast in our 20’s and while our original path was to finish college, sometimes we veered off that course.
I know many women who didn’t get their bachelor’s degree at 21. I was lucky to be able to, but my path to education didn’t stop there. I went back to school after being married for just two years and we were moving into a new house… immediately, I ran into struggles because I was juggling so much.
My job was my life and I was so overcommitted. Long work hours, endless presentations and yet, I was focused on getting another degree to see what other opportunities would open up for me.
If you ever have been curious about where to finish your degree or wondered if it is even possible to fit college into your schedule, I’m writing to help you realize it is time to lavishly live life out loud and show you how finishing your degree can add so much to your life! It IS possible! Who’s in?
How Finishing Your Degree Can Be Rewarding
First things first, let’s talk about where you can have a positive, life-changing experience. There are colleges that are ready and waiting to help you become the best version of you. In fact, many of them are fully online programs with so many benefits!
Look for accelerated sessions to customized learning models, helpful and supportive advisors, faculty and alumni mentors. That is what you should seek!
Why Now? It’s YOUR Time.
There is no one size fits all solution. There are so many reasons as to why someone may not have finished college. You may have left college because of a family emergency or suddenly took on a role as a guardian. Or maybe your job was demanding, yet not so rewarding? Others did not finish degrees because they fell in love and became moms, and their path veered away from college and into a family life.
Well, it’s your time now. You have taken care of everyone’s needs before your own and it is time for you to take care of YOU. I will tell you, based on personal experience; as a holder of multiple degrees, there is nothing like finishing your degree and feeling your self-esteem just skyrocket through the ceiling. If you thought you had already conquered the world by being a partner, a wife, a mom – wait until you wrap your fingers around a diploma.
Let’s just say a diploma is the feel-good component of your life and the one thing no one can take away from you. In life, we experience loss of jobs, of marriages and of family, but the loss you have experienced of not finishing your degree is the loss of the one thing YOU can fix!
A VERY DIFFERENT & MORE FORMIDABLE PLAN FOR YOU
For me personally, finding professors who understood that I also had a day job was nearly impossible. Assignment completion was a time management struggle. Every day I had to make clear-cut decisions about my time and how I managed it.
Would I use my lunch break to complete an assignment or would I use late night hours? How could I prepare for a presentation at work and also prepare for a presentation at school? Time mattered, the degree mattered, and the rewards in life were going to come after I got the degree, so I forged on.
But there are programs now that are designed to help you overcome all of these challenges, Google colleges (online, etc). Here are a few key reasons why I think they are the best way to earn your degree.
Your Time Matters
Accelerated sessions at colleges help you earn your degree quickly. Additionally, many offer weekly start times throughout the year. Think college that fits into YOUR life.
Degrees A Plenty
Your college of choice should offers degrees in many different fields so you can keep your options open. Personally, I love that you can complete the degrees completely online, so you have the flexibility you need to juggle everything else in your life!
Everything You Have Done Counts
You don’t have to start from scratch, just pick up the pieces. Seek out a school where you can transfer credits you may have already completed towards your degree! Also, look for options to earn college credits for prior learning from your work, volunteer work or military service.
AN EYE ON THE FUTURE
This is not just about finishing a degree, it’s about so much more. This is about making new friends, self-esteem (something you cannot put a price tag on) and better job positioning. Plus, more money… you’ll make more with a bachelor’s degree than without.
Who among us went to college and is really doing the job they got a degree for? Many of us changed our paths, changed our lives and figured out where we fit. Allow college to flawlessly fit into your life. Take those transfer credits, use them and finish becoming you.
As a further illustration of how rewarding finishing your degree is, let me point out what may be completely overlooked. The icing on the cake is creating a path that sets the bar higher for your kids, one that you want them to follow. There is nothing like an education and there is nothing more powerful than showing by example.
As a mom, it is always important to write your story so your kids can follow. Leading by example is leading yourself to finish what you started and truly becoming the best you.
