It is a wintry night, and we are road tripping, 18 hours away, because my kids refused to get in a plane and fly to Orlando, Florida. While the weather outside is frightful, inside the car, it is absolutely delightful and you know why? The answer is plain and simple, my kids are busy, entertained and happy but the happiest of all is my teen, Kallie. The NOOK GlowLight is keeping her eyes peeled to adventures, and teen mags, all the way. I almost forgot that we have Kallie in the car. Window to window all you see in the car are blankets, pillows and headphones. We are headed to our first stop in Virginia, to the Residence Inn and I don’t hear much of anything not even a page flipping in a book. Why might I hear nothing? Perhaps because a NOOK GlowLight is in the car traveling with us and it requires no page turning. Lavishly live travel out loud when the kids are content and the only thing glowing are their readers!
As the trek to Florida is a pretty normal adventure for me as we venture there every summer, I am also well aware of the kids and their little travel routine: gabbing, fighting, hunger and then, “are we there yet?” What is not so normal today is the quiet, and calm car filled with kids that I am experiencing. The technology that Kallie has with her lets her stay entertained and knowledge-bound as she is reading, growing her vocabulary!
An Overview of The NOOK GlowLight
The NOOK GlowLight offers a way to read in the dark and you can control the glow. As you know however, traveling with kids is never an easy prophecy, and trying to keep them entertained is its own whole program. As a mom I want my kids to enjoy the travel time as a family and alone, and I want some of it to be a bit educational. We have all been there as parents, hence the the License Plate game. Often in-car DVD players are the perfect solution, at least for the first 2 movies, then the restlessness sets in and the punchiness and then of course the fighting. With three children ages 10 and to teen time in a car no matter how small or large can often create other challenges and personal time is a must. The NOOK GlowLight is truly a mom’s best companion for kids. What Can I Use The NOOK GlowLight for? The NOOK GlowLight is for reading Books, Magazines and Newspapers, whether subscriptions or single purchases. The WiFi is built in.
Prepping the Nook GlowLight
My daughter is all about technology, about as much as I am and we love everything new, smart and trendy. We were excited to test out the the NOOK GlowLight for the trip we took to Florida and it provided reading of every sort all the way down and back and she was glowing with enthusiasm. The NOOK GlowLight gets the Pittsburgh Frugal Mom seal of approval as it is educational while being trendy and it makes it a great piece to travel with because it is light and compact and fits into small bags.
Before we left for our trip, Kallie and I visited the Barnes and Noble site, loaded the NOOK GlowLight with great reads for my daughter, myself, my husband and the boys. Our titles ranged from books for teens, magazines(DIY, Teen, Kids) to novels that the boys love to read, a little something for everyone. We each familiarized ourselves with how the Nook GlowLight functioned. I provided a demo for each person, moving through the U key, how to change the level of glow, and how to change font size, the three most critical items at least in my mind. In addition, I showed each person how to access the library(one touch easy) and how to move through their pages.
The biggest smile came across each person’s face when I explained to them that they could each have about 500 books each store on this Nook GlowLight as it is able to store up to 2000 books which is 2x more storage than the competitor!(and if you don’t know who the competitor is, I am not going to tell you- you just need to know that the Nook GlowLight will have you reading more and more each day because it is fun to tote around and use.
The Nook GlowLight
The Nook GlowLight is super easy to use, and it does not provide challenges along the way. Additionally, the Nook GlowLight maintains a charge for just about 8 weeks and while we have not had it nearly that long, I truly can attest to the fact that it has not needed charged again and it has been a few weeks. I can’t believe how light the reader is and my daughter loves the look of it when she is holding it. My daughter read in the car during the day, with sun blaring through the windows, and at night with no light other than the Nook GlowLight itself. The NOOK GlowLight features perfectly lit pages, and sharp(and you can change the size). My daughter loves the fact, as do I, that there are no annoying Ads and No Full Page Flashing Ads which allow you to really get into what you are reading and not be distracted from the story, or article, after all how does one read, concentrate and become fully immersed in a story if something is flashing on the screen. Page turning is a non-event and there is no flash of light when you do this.
How do you know what you are reading and what if you are reading more than one item at a time? I love to bounce from what I am reading to something else. I might have 2 magazines open at once comparing articles I have read, or my daughter might be reading something and I might snag the NOOK GlowLight from her. No problem, the NOOK GlowLight offers the feature of ‘READING NOW’ which is found on the home screen. Again this is so easy to use, there are just no challenges except perhaps for vocabulary words you may run into in the novels you are reading.
Color And Size- Aesthetics of the Nook GlowLight
The GlowLight is just about 6.2 ounces making it the lightest NOOK on the market and even lighter than the Kindle Paperwhite. My daughter held onto this for hours as we drove and never put it down. I held the NOOK GlowLight and never felt a cramp in my hand nor did it feel uncomfortable. The shape of the GlowLight is ergonomic in nature and it is contoured to fit into your hand. The color of the GlowLight is refreshing and eye-pleasing; a nice warm-white and I do believe that actually helps out the screen display. The Trim on this GlowLight is made from a silky silicon which helps in case of those accidental drops(um, kids have those a lot)
An additional item you may want to know about purchasing – my random thought:) Barnes & Noble has a tab dedicated to the NOOK, meaning just go to the tab and find the books, magazines, or papers you want to purchase and that is it. Easy, peasy.
The mom in me loves the NOOK GlowLight for its portability as well as educational value. My husband loves that his magazine is always within reach and that we don’t have to run to the store to find the latest issue, it is just delivered right to his NOOK(lol). My daughter simply can’t get enough of her books. Kallie loves the fact that her books are in her purse(on the NOOK GlowLight) and that she can access any of them, at any point in time. When Kallie wants to read a magazine she does not have to do anymore than go to her library and read. I might add the final MOTHER OF A NOTE for your consideration: when you are in public, reading magazines and books that others have touched, pages and leafed through, you are also getting those nasty little things called germs on your hands, this actually alleviates the need to touch those oh so fondled items found in Dr.’s offices and other public forums…..just saying.
I do not own a Kindle, therefore I can’t tell you all about what it does, but what I do own is a NOOK GlowLight and since I do, and we have been using it I can speak candidly about its functionality and absolute crisp screen resolution which is unlike anything I have seen before on tablets and other technological devices. I am a tastemaker, I seek out the best new items, I try them out and I make sure to tell you how things work. What is for certain is that holidays creep up, Easter Baskets need filled, report cards need gifted for their outstanding marks and kids and adults need to read. NOOK GlowLight supports all of those functions and serves well as a birthday gift, and everyday gift or just a practical technological tool to have in your home that everyone can share. The price point of only $119 is incredibly affordable and you can even load free e-books onto it, so in reality you could really just use this to read free books. The true value in this is that B&N is such a reputable company that provides outstanding customer service and they have made an item that is not only attractive to look at, but easy to transport and it is affordable and keeps kids and adults learning and reading.
The NOOK GlowLight is a really great travel tool, as well as smart tool to have both in your house, glove box and purse. Don’t try and use technologically challenged as an excuse to not make this purchase as anyone could use the NOOK GlowLight with ease. There will be no more cutting down trees to create paper as this really is the environments best friend, using so little electricity and no paper, this should be the Green Smart Technological item of the year! Get reading, and start your adventure with a white, light, NOOK, GlowLight from B & N. Lavishly live life out loud and enjoy reading while traveling, no matter what the light is like outside, you will always be glowing with your NOOK!
