Every so often we’re lured towards fast foods and foods that promise to satisfy us in the midst of our hectic lifestyles. Although, I myself sometimes give in to those sinful treats, there is a category of food that can go far beyond just satisfying our momentary hunger, and that is…FRUIT. There is such a variety of fruits now a days, you could eat an apple, strawberries, bananas, grapes, or even things like starfruit and pomegranate. There are massive amounts of flavors and benefits to saying yes to fruit. First of all, it is so refreshing! Have you ever sat down on a hot summer day after doing yard work and grabbed a fresh piece of watermelon? That first bite of watermelon is one of my favorite feelings, because it satisfies your taste buds on a whole other level. Also, fruit is good for you in so many ways. Each fruit has a different benefit which is what makes it an amazing asset to any meal. Our family decided it was time to try a new fruit. Lavishly living food out loud, this is my story about a Pepino Melon from Frieda’s Specialty Produce.
The taste of the Pepino Melon
When I first bit into the melon, I got an overwhelming taste of cantaloupe for whatever reason. It was delicious, but not what I expected. My dad, however, tasted pear. He described it as juicy but a strong pear taste was the flavor he took from it. Lastly, my mom tasted it and said she tasted cucumber! We were all in such awe because this fruit was throwing us for a loop! So we did what we thought was best and resorted to Frieda’s Specialty site to see what this little humdinger was all about! I’ll admit it was so much fun tasting the fruit and talking it over with our family.
This fruit was oval in shape as you can see and has stripes on it, almost like a reverse eggplant look. As the stripes increase it is showing you that it has ripened. The skin is very smooth to touch, so soft, like a tumbled stone. This is also called a Pepino Dulce, or a sweet cucumber and honestly it does taste like it. The texture when your tongue touches it is more pear-like, with that little bit of grit sensation, but not a lot and just when you think you know what you are consuming you taste other flavors like cantaloupe. This was so delicious and I could see us wrapping pieces of Prosciutto around it or even Copa Secca Capicolla as it would meet their intense flavors!
