Holiday decor storage ideas when you undecorate
Once all the hype is over, and Christmas is passed, it’s time to deconstruct. Eyeroll.
Every year I have 32+ totes of Christmas decorations that I put up and it all has to come down.
Plus, there are generally 5 trees that either need stored or undecorated.
As a pro decorating and un-decorating kind of girl, after repeatedly taking this task on over the years, I want to share what I’ve learned.
What goes up must come down and then you’ll need holiday decor storage ideas
Just as the Christmas decorations went up for the holiday they have to come down.
Somehow, the taking down goes so much faster, but it can also leave you disorganized.
What I’ve learned through the years is that staying organized and ready for the next year is a key component to successful and frustration-free decorating.
There are some ingenious ways to store and organize your Christmas Decorations, and I’ll share the things you will need!
Holiday decor storage ideas while you are packing up
Holiday decor storage ideas to box it up, but not really
Get rid of every single cardboard box, and recycle them!
Now, start with clear storage totes.
These are the truest key to successful storage.
When you can see what you have, you can USE what you have.
Eyeball up what you have to store?
Then buy the appropriately-sized totes.
Consider how they will stack and how many you need.
These are some of the 31-32 Qt clear bins with buckle latches that I love.
Also, Home Depot has lots of ‘stuff’ you might not know about and is often less crowded, and has more in stock than your typical retailer!
Close them and they are sealed.
Also, Target and Walmart have great storage options in their organization and storage aisles.
What Goes In The Box…
Don’t just buy the plastic totes and let it end there.
You may be storing generational decor, or things that are one-of-a-kind.
We have many decorative pieces from my grandparents, and parents, as well as from when we were kids.
Storage is not just about putting things away, but about storing them properly for those items to go the long miles.
One purchase I’ve made and NEVER regretted is a roll of perforated bubble wrap.
Bubble cushioning with perforations is a must-have item for packing up those ceramic trees, and Santa’s. etc.
One-of-a-kind decoration pieces purchased when traveling abroad, etc, wrap them with love and bubble wrap!
PRO-TIP Holiday Decor Storage Ideas ~ Recycle
I don’t want to buy wrap for packing up the holidays, what else can I do?
- use those plastic bags you keep after your grocery trips. This is a great way to upcycle, just cluster them together and wrap them around what you need to pack!
- new shoes have wedges of tissue, keep that stashed each time you buy a new pair and use that as well (I keep a bag packed with this stuff, in the basemnet out of the way, but ready for holiday packing action)
- Newspaper and old magazines paper do well too, as do teeshirts (old ones may be used as rags)
Clip & Hang holiday decor storage ideas
Consider how many large items you have that might be able to be hung?
What can’t be boxed can be hung and this is a great way to store multiple items.
First and foremost you will need storage clips.
However, make sure these are both Storage Heavy duty hanging clips and able to be hung on a hanger, like these.
As you can see, where the CLIP closes is a nice opening as well, so it will slide on a ‘thicker’ hanger or hanging rod.
Always make sure you find a clip of this sort for hangers and rods.
My other go-to items for hanging are sturdy clips that I can attach to hangers that I then hang on storage bars or rolling wardrobe carts and sparkly pipe cleaners.
Sparkle pipe cleaners are fantastic for winding electrical extensions and then adding tags to.
This helps you know what you used each one for last year so you can use it again and not buy another!
Install a Hanging Bar Under Your Steps ~ Christmas Decoration Storage Ideas
If you have hooks installed in a storage closet or a hanging bar on shelving, this is a great way to store items as well.
First, if you want to hang some of your items, but you don’t have a way to do so, grab a hanging cart on wheels.
These are actually great to have on hand.
For those considering ‘spring’ tension rods, purchase one that is more heavy-duty than not.
Also if you are going to use a Spring Tension Rod, consider how much weight and how much clearance from the steps to the floor you have!
The Hanging Shelves
So, we have several portable storage closets with covers which are great in attics, and basement storage areas, so you get everything off the floor and stored properly!
Some might call these garment hangers?
Portable garment hangers are amazing.
Just hang our wreaths, and wreath holders, as well as any other hanging items (Santa’s, bows, garland), and you are done.
Pop the portable garment hanger cover on and you are golden until next year!
Tree Dust Covers
Instead of taking your trees apart year after year, just pop one of these brilliant covers over them.
Rugged, durable, and with handles, these upright tree covers are perfection!
Keeps pests, critters, and your own pets out and off of the trees as they are perfectly stored until next year.
When you are ready to decorate, just take the bag off and there’s your tree!
EASY Peasy!
