Bayou Country Has Snowballs, Crazy Good Cupcakes and a very Bizarre Sculpture Garden You Have To See!
Snowballs. Cupcakes. Sculpture Garden. Three things you may not expect to find in Bayou Country but you will. My Insider’s tips will get you to the best of Bayou Country. While traveling through Houma, I asked Joni (my friend) to show me the most out-of-bounds types of things and she totally delivered. on her shares.
The cupcakes I will share with you are not your run-of-the-mill goopy, grocery store cupcakes. Cupcakes in Houma are an artisan craft. Simply put, if you miss these, be ashamed of yourself, because when in Houma, being Swamp Chic, ‘shugga betta be on the menu of fun’ as Joni might say! (love this girl to pieces you will too!)
Now, let me share with you, the Insiders tips you gotta know!
To be honest, if I had not experienced this ‘stuff’ I am about to share with you, I would have so missed out on the real feeling of Houma, Lousiana. My trips move at lightning speed, sometimes it’s like if I blink I am done.
Best experiences happen in the least likely of places. Houma is hot. I don’t care when you are there, you will feel it. I happened to be there in October. The temperatures stayed in the 80’s and the sun meant to burn me!
There was rain at night and sun by day, so darn perfect. Again, if you have not read my other Houma articles you may not know that over 70% of Louisiana is covered in water. Crazy but true! Just a little fact I thought you might like, as I was amused.
For that reason, I could not go walking the one morning through a park, because there were snakes and ‘swashie’ conditions. The path we were supposed to walk on was covered with things I personally NEVER want to come in contact with, so we diverted our attention and did other things.
The Sculpture Garden That Is Just…….
If you guess Chavin Sculpture Garden, you win! Remember, art is appreciated differently by everyone and this is just my opinion, yours may differ. XO
Make up your own mind. Think what you may. I must make this statement, “weirdest ever experience I have traveled to and walked through. At moments it was eerie, and at times exciting.
There was no way to stop thinking of the man, Kenny Hill, that created the sculptures with a fork and spoon and then walked away.” That’s him in the photo above and all the photos to follow.
Kenny Hill is depicted in every sculpture there, so seeing his face was totally off-color for me. Being honest, it was like a trainwreck, but I kept looking.
Kenny shares the world through his eyes, but I believe it was a world he was struggling in. Odd, creepy, life-filled, yet, totally morbid is how to describe the different stages he shares in the sculptures.
Yep, that’s the story. Something was definitely ‘off’ with the gentleman that sculpted this garden and his ‘ex-house’ is next door to it. He took a spoon and a fork and crafted everything you are seeing with those 2 tools and his hands ONLY.
He seems to have gone through some serious transitional phases inside his mind and he played them out though sculpture. It seems his struggle with life was real and he shared it through his outward expressions in this Sculpture Garden.
Gotta be honest, I felt like ‘all eyes were on us’ when we were there and I did not want to ‘selfie’ other than the one that we snapped. It was ominous. strange and at some points frightening.
Kenny walked away from his home (next door) and his life there in 2000. Just vanished. Now a local university owns it. It’s free and a Houma must-see attraction.
Cupcakes Were Ravaged
The scene I am about to share with you should be played ONLY if you have some cupcakes around you (albeit they won’t be this delish). OMG Cupcake Factory truly earns its name! WOW! Please stop licking the screen.
Trust me, you will crave these sugar-hyped, perfectly fashioned, tasty, morsels of heaven.
Allow me to describe what we experienced: ‘light fluffy clouds that offer a sugar-hyped, euphoric high that were both sapid and succulent’
Definitely should have brought these home on the plane without a question. I did, however, try that once and TSA was not too happy with me and of course, they took my stuff. So, that is why these never made it in my bag!
Snowballs In Houma do Happen
If you thought that you can’t find snowballs in Houma, you are WRONG. Let me share them with you and then you can experience them as well. Sharing is caring, right?
The day was balmy and truly when in this destination as Joni explained to me, elevation ZERO you gotta drink to remain on your feet. It’s warm, and you can so get dehydrated easily.
In search of snow in Houma? Search no more, because Snowballs are here! Try. Taste. Choose. Repeat. I took one for the team and of course, really was happy to do so. You don’t even get a frozen tongue, because you are so busy slurping, you keep your tongue warm.
Experience Bayou Country
The best way to experience Bayou Country is to take a girlfriend getaway. Indulge in sweets, adventure and travel deeper into the area than you thought possible. Local eats, drinks and totally off-the-wall experiences await. ~ DANA XO
My thanks to Houma, Louisiana for hosting me! All images and opinions are my own.
