Hunting Preparation List

May 26, 2016 By Dana Vento 62 Comments

hunting, hunting essentials, guns, knives, backpacks, boots, rain gear, built in lights, RunLites, batteries, battery packs, food, dark, light, deer, fish, doe, bear, rabbit, turkey, hunters, hunting in pa, hunting people, hunting necessities

Gifting is something we do year round and since my guys are all hunters, I am always on the prowl for fantastic add-on essentials for their hunting gear.  This year, I  have begun looking even earlier so that when the seasons change and that big game hunting, known in Pennsylvania as Deer Hunting(lol) begins, their bags will be set!  The excitement that my dad, husband and son start to spew over those licenses is just amazing to me.  I don’t get that excited for the season as I know that a whole lot of things are about to happen in our home.

You know me as the diva of shopping, all things beauty, a DIY Expert and of course an all around foodie, but did you know that I have been learning so much about hunting?  My dad hunted for as long as I can remember, my husband joined in when we got engaged and now my son is off with them and hunting as well.

It’s amazing how much stuff a family can enjoy and how where crossovers of items can make things great, like accessories, fashion, and food!  Here’s a little bit of our Hunting Preparation List as the guys get ready to lavishly live the great outdoors out loud!

Hunting Preparation List

My mom starts to bake like crazy and so do I, as food prep and lunches, breakfasts and dinners are very important to the hunters in our homes, but it is also unload the storage closets and that means a mess! Baking, we fill their pockets, and shopping we fill their closets.

I do find that hunting seems to be an excuse to just get together with the guys in our house, and to really just take a few days off to hang out, but in reality, I know it is a sport and they take great pride in what they catch.

There is a lot of preparation that goes into hunting and trust me my family takes all the steps to be successful with their sport from safety to the prized game!  This is a little bit about our hunting experiences in our homes from preparation to accessories it is all part of the hunter’s game!

Obtain A License and Get Schooled And Be Inducted into the Secret Society Within A Family (lol)

A few years ago when my son was able to obtain a license you would have thought it was like a ‘debutante affair’ with a celebratory meal, and toasts and just general excitement.  For as long as I can remember my dad has been hunting, and when I met my husband he joined forces and they have been hunting and now then the inaugural add-in of my son just seemed natural.  As natural as it was, there was studying, time spent int the classroom training and plenty of time scouting out the best spots, and places for hunting.

Scout, Scout, And Learn The Land – I Still Think This Is Just A Reason To Get Out Of The House For The Day:)

My Dad takes my son and they are off to seek the best vantage points for the season.  They make an absolute day of it and it does not end with just one trip, there are multiple trips, and I don’t get it.  I mean, are you not just going to look at the same trees that were there last week? Apparently there is some strategy to this and looking at the lay of the land on multiple days at different times gives them a better idea of where they want to be when the opening day occurs.

THINK MULTIPLE CLOTHING OPTIONS FOR ALL WEATHER FASHION

Weather is often a bear of a problem, but not for the well-prepared hunters.  My family of hunters have multiple wardrobes for the different weather challenges from rain to snow and everything in between, however, I don’t have multiple wash machines and this stuff comes home DIRTY and stinky.

My husband, dad and son line up all their clothes, try everything on, test out all the pockets, make sure there are no holes and see if they need any new inventory in their supplies?

To me, Orange is orange, Camo is Camo, but to them, the right pieces, the right brands, the right accessories make those days spent outdoors so much more comfortable.   I can relate to this, but I would never put myself out in the cold weather and sit there watching for animals all day when I could shopping in nice heated stores sipping on lattes.

What I do understand is that the right pieces make the difference and are essential.

It’s all about the weather!

Hunting Preparation List, hunting, deer, men, guys, ladies, equipment, weather, moon, fish, deer, forecast, temperature, date

AcuRite knows that sportsmen need to know the elements, and the forecast and the AcuRite Sportsman’s Forecaster makes hunting and fishing even more successful with its ability to predict high wildlife activity based on weather forecast and lunar activity!

Hunting Preparation List, hunting, deer, men, guys, ladies, equipment, weather, moon, fish, deer, forecast, temperature, date

This is a 2 piece set and the most worshiped item in our home(lol, if you have hunters you understand). The piece you see hanging in my tree is outside, not directly getting nailed by sun, or the nasty weather(though it is weather resistant).  This piece is a readout to the monitor so you can know the month, the time, the weather, the possibility of deer hunting(woot woot) and of course today’s temperature.

This has a Fishing and hunting success meter, outdoor temperatures, Intelli Time Self Setting Clock, Barometric Pressure, Moon Phase and the Future Forecast.  In addition there is the outdoor sensor that has the integrated hanger so you can easily hang it and the LED indicator.

The set up on this was super easy, pop a few batteries in, and pick you time zone and you are off and running, or off and waiting to see the deer activity!

THE ESSENTIALS

hunting, hunting essentials, guns, knives, backpacks, boots, rain gear, built in lights, RunLites, batteries, battery packs, food, dark, light, deer, fish, doe, bear, rabbit, turkey, hunters, hunting in pa, hunting people, hunting necessities

Hunting translates to 4 AM wake-ups and early travel into dark areas. I have the best solution for seeing whatever is in your backpack, fanny-packs. and on the ground and area around you without taking out your phone, or a flashlight. I have found the ultimate in gloves with built-in lights that offer low and high settings and have a removable, compact light: RunLites.

There are 2 brightness settings on these gloves and that is great for when the guys are traveling in the trucks to their hunting locations and inevitably someone drops something between the seats. No need for phone flashlights, just let your glove do the job.  If you were to use the brightest setting (80 lumens) it will work for 6 full hours on its charge.  The low setting (40 lumens) will offer 12 hours of light!

The RunLites are very comfortable, fit well and run true to size, follow the sizing chart on their website and you will be very pleased with your order, we are!

The batteries on the gloves are rechargeable and there is a USB cord included.

Here are a few more suggestions to complete the well-rounded list for Hunting Supplies:

Boots that can take ANY type of terrain and weather elements are boots you definitely want on your feet, check out the pairs we have tested out!

Great Bags to tote back up clothing in and gear – those that can take a beating and keep on moving!

Some form of READERS that are terrain safe and weather able

Warm Socks are so important, even in great boots, feet still get cold and if you can wick away moisture and deliver a sock that does not cause blisters you have an amazing trek ahead.

Hydration Please! It is important to drink, and keep well hydrated and I have found the way to hydration bliss in a bottle!

Don’t forget to invest in a great hunting knife like this Surviv-All Survival Knife from StatGear Tools.

The knife offers a heavy duty belt sheath, that’s right it is included and you will find a fire starter rod and a cord cutter! What else could possibly be built-in to this amazing hunting knife that every hunter needs?  How about an integrated knife sharpener stone right on the rear of the sheath.

This is one bad-ass knife.  The knife handle is secure to the sheath, offers a 9.5″  blade length and the weight is 7.5 oz, and when the knife is in the sheath it will weight in at 13 ounces.

I liked that you pointed out that it would be smart to bring clothes for all different types of weather. My father wants to take my nephews on a hunting and fishing trip soon. It seems like it would be smart to make sure that they have a long sleeved shirt and thicker jackets. That way, they can have options when getting ready for the day.

Your tip about making sure to wear warm socks that can wick away moisture and not cause blisters was very helpful when it comes to getting prepared for a hunt. My brothers and I are hoping to hunt an elk this season. In addition to the clothes and food, I’ll also need to find a good scope to make sure I have a clean shot if one becomes available.

My father and I have always wanted to go hunting together for big game. We would love to hunt a trophy-sized buck. Your tip about how wearing a warm sock that won’t cause blisters makes a lot of sense. If my feet aren’t comfortable, I wouldn’t have a great time hunting. We’d love to go to a place where we could have a guide to help us find the right buck.

I grew up in the woods, started bow hunting at age of 12. Never really used all the gear and accessories. Probably cause it was too much for me to keep up with. Over the years I have added a few things. I love having the sportsman guide to keep my blood thumping come season. Hitting age 44 I still love to hunt and help those would love to try. I have taken several people out on successful hunt excursions with the bare essentials. I think if I could be outfitted with some gear I would be able to make this a full time hobby. One buddy in schyler county Illinois hadn’t hunted his family farm in 20 years. I got him to go and after locating good spots he was able to take down his first deer at age 41. We have been going back for the last 5 years and now our boys are involved. I really feel like a student of the hunt and love teaching others the passion

Great list. One thing that I would also include is to bring multiple rifle scopes as backups on your hunting trip, unless you have a really good one. If it’s a good quality scope, you won’t have to worry about it, but if you have a scope under $100, bring multiple scopes. In some cases, the weather may fog up the glass making it near impossible to actually hit the target. Cheaper scopes may even lose their zero depending on how old the scope is or even if you accidentally drop it or on the rough ride to the hunting site banging around in the back of the pickup. Quality scopes usually don’t have these problems. Great list though, thanks.
