Each year as we head to our attics, and then gather all the totes I am reminded time after time that decor eventually breaks down. We all have our favorite pieces of decor, and our favorite lights but sometimes it is time to part ways. My mind starts drifting to the possibility that it is time to update some of our holiday decor. How about some tips for updating holiday decor?
As I trudged up into our one attic I saw a few pieces I wanted to use, but then remembered that the bows were tethered, and that the lights were not working. Rather than putting them up I put them in the trash. My mind starts thinking about the ad I just saw for one of our favorite retailers and I think I need to get there. Craftiness sets in and it is about time for the season to take hold of my spirit!
A simple fix to throwing away some items is knowing how to update your holiday decor and remember there are so many new things in the store that are waiting to become part of your home! There are things we all crave for decor that we hold off on buying until the other stuff no longer functions and my home was at this crossroads. Here are my tips for updating holiday decor in a few easy steps.
Hello Holiday Decor Shopping
After a call to my husband explaining the bleak news that our favorite outdoor stuff was beyond repair I loaded the kids into the car we headed out to go shopping! I just wanted him to know we were not going to be there when he got home, and if you know me, a ‘quick’ shopping trip is 3 hours give or take a bit (lol). I never know what I am going to find but there is always a store full of possibility and a staff that is friendly ( you know that I love that)!
Preparation Before The Buy
Along the way, the kids read through the store flyers to see if they could see anything they would potentially want to add into our exterior decor and I had a list in my mind for a few interior updates as well. Everyone scouted something out that they wanted to add to our theme and as a family, we made the decision to change things up this year. The whole reason for this spontaneous trip was to update our holiday decor and we were about to really update holiday decor with grandeur.
Tips For Updating Holiday Decor
Christmas Is About Illumination
I love the outdoor illuminations we have seen all over the place as we travel and as we venture through local neighborhoods. The hues of multi-color mini lights really brighten the sky. Lighting up a home adds warmth, depth, and style.
To me, a few new items to light the pathway, brighten the house and illuminate the trees seemed to make the most sense, so that is exactly what I began shopping for. (above Candy Canes, Penguin, Front Lit Tree, and Star Shower are all products we purchased this shopping trip to update)
Before we started the pathway was not lit and we had never done that before, but my son requested Candy Canes. These link to one another very easy and about 7 together truly light up the walkway.
Everyone Loves Penguins
Who said Penguins are just for the North Pole? If that’s true the North Pole just moved to my front yard with the addition of this easy to inflate and place. He’s 6 feet tall and a few stakes and some electricity and he is standing tall!
Star Shower
I have found a simple way to shower our home with lights of red and green as though it were a Star Shower. The best part of this update on holiday decor is the fact that I just had to plug it in and position it!
The key factor in getting this decor just right is getting the stake in the ground while the soil is still mobile and not frozen. Remember not to shoot this into the sky keep it at the level of the house and the peaks.
Light Up The Trees
This is one of my least favorite tasks because it seriously takes so long to get it done right. This year my ‘tall’ son helped me and we wrapped the tree and the trunk. The Sienna Color Of Christmas 100 count Mini colored bulbs offered us 28 feet of wrapping colorful bliss. We wrapped a few trees and then headed indoors to dress up the house and update the holiday decor in there.
Deck The Walls
Having framed photos already placed on the walls is an open invitation to ‘deck the walls’ and I took myself up on it. I simply fell in love with this framed snowman art. The snowman melts my heart and I collect them so the framed art is magnificent and updates an interior without effort.
Banisters Are For The Holidays
Coming up with a theme year after year for the front staircase banister is somewhat challenging. For us, no electrical cords are wanted they just get in the way. Clean, light and crisp with a fun, frolicking feel is how we like it and the results speak for themselves.
I bought new red bows (so reasonable) and packages of 10 LED tear-shaped lights that are run by batteries. I added a few green garland ties and a few other items we already had and suddenly the front staircase was lit!
The Table
Sitting down at a table that has no holiday adornment is about as blah as it gets. We spend a lot of time in the dining areas feasting on sweet treats, fabulous starters and sipping those holiday glasses of wines and beers. As can be seen, dressing up the table, and adding on a snappy new element of holiday spirit by spreading one tablecloth and a few matching napkins changes the spirit of the room.
Additionally, a bin stacked with holiday linens was calling my name and I am so glad I answered:) ( hahaha). I bought the Holidays Decorative Tablecloth and as a result of adding a tablecloth I then I added a matching set of napkins. The tartan is light, not harsh and the bit of gold flecking just screams holiday!
I have shared with you how to update holiday decor, it is easy and it is about adding pieces not loads of stuff. Adding in a few pieces here and a touch of elegance there makes a holiday memorable. It’s not about quantity it’s about thoughtfulness and those things everyone talks about later. Lavishly live the holidays out loud since you know how to update holiday decor.
Happy Holidays
