We have a long-standing war with the weeds in our lawn. If we get them under control, our neighbors seem to catch them, and pass them back and vice versa. But it’s not just the lawn that gets attacked its all of the beds around the yard too.
Our goal is to control the weeds in our lawn and enjoy the lovely grass that exists. Clover is pesky as are dandelions. If you have the right tools of the trade you can really get control of the weeds in your lawn.
The spray you use is just one part of the equation, and you need to add in the delivery of the spray. What method is best for tackling those weeds and getting them under control. Sure, the home and garden centers sell spray bottles of stuff but is that how to best deliver the weed control to your lawn?
Here is the best method for delivering weed control to your lawn. Lavishly live this DIY out loud and head outside to tackle the little green beasties!
Best Method For Delivering Weed Control To Your Lawn
Product provided by RYOBI Outdoor Tools, opinions and images are my own, as a DIY kind of gal who works side-by-side with my husband to improve our life by simple projects!
There’s nothing like weeds to be the killjoy of a beautiful lawn. I watch our neighbors walking around with the mowers and bottles of pre-mixed weed killer in their back pocket. As they mow, they stop and spray the patch.
First, as far as ergonomics go, that method sucks. Also, the premixed spray bottles come with a hefty price tag. Last, by the time they actually get their lawn cut, after all the stopping it is double the time they anticipated. No thanks to extra activity, I’d rather be sipping drinks on the patio one hour quicker or toting a drink in my pocket, not weed-killer.
What are the choices when it comes to delivering weed control to your lawn? Pretty much, ripping the lawn out and starting over, after treating the soil, and that is a ton of work. Should you hire a company to come out?
You could hire a company to come and spray their pest control and weed control too. This option can provide a pretty price tag as most services necessitate a contract of at least 4 applications per year at a price you may not want to deal with.
The best option is to tackle the weed issue by yourself, with a solution that you mix and spray as needed. No need to hire someone, or to tote weed killer in your back pocket while mowing the lawn. Rather, mow the lawn and look at the weather forecast.
If you determine it is not going to rain over the next 24 hours it is time to place some serious weed strangulation on those beasties growing and spreading in your lawn. I do mention the weather factor because no matter what the concentrate states (rainproof) you truly need to let it dry just a bit.
The Best Sprayer For The Job
Clearly, we all have our way of doing things, but after trying each of the aforementioned weed-killing expeditions on our lawn, we moved to what makes sense. I want the job done, fast and efficiently. I do not want to have to bend in any strange positions to kill weeds.
Personally, the fast the better and the easier the better. For us, and the large area our lawn covers, pumping truly hurts our hands. We would have some serious carpal tunnel I believe if we did our whole lawn by the bottle. Gotta say our neighbor is nuts. To do our area, we would need to purchase so many gallons of the pre-mixed weed killer it is simply not worth it either.
The tool of the trade is a RYOBI 18V Cordless 2-Gallon Chemical Sprayer (P2830) available online only! One charge and you can spray 30 gallons without pumping. YES, I will repeat, this whole sentence.
We charge our RYOBI 18V Cordless 2-Gallon Chemical Sprayer because it works on an 18-Volt battery and charger. This battery is the battery that is compatible with all of our Ryobi ONE+ tools which you see us using in all of our DIY Projects. We are a #RYOBINation home!
RYOBI 18V Cordless 2-Gallon Chemical Sprayer
Ergonomically Friendly
Do you see how my husband is spraying? He is not squatting like our neighbor. He does not need to bend down to get to the weeds because the generous wands are long enough to get to the ‘root’ of the problem, (lol).
An adjustable spray nozzle makes it the perfect tool for a variety of applications. You can use this one handed or 2. The tank comes with its own measuring cup. 54″ is the length of the hose. We used continuous spray be depressing the trigger. Please do note, the battery should be fully charged for best performance.
Why is this continuous spray so perfect to us? You do not have to keep depressing the trigger to shoot the patches, it is just a stream. No hurting your hand from depressing trigger! Yahoo! No pumping necessary, just fill and go. We are not exhausted by the end of the day from pumping, and the coverage is perfect.
Truly this used to be a chore that would take hours, but now it is just about 1 hour to get our whole yard done. When we are done, we watch our neighbors who keep on hand spraying, poor suckers, they think they got this under control! (no worries we already suggested the tool!)
The wand offers a brass nozzle and fitting on the wand. Truly incredible to prevent corrosion, we love this tidbit! We simply can not say enough about how much we LOVE this sprayer. For foundation spraying of bugs and pests, to lawn and weeds, the continuous spray and the ease of application has been game-changing.
What We Used
Generally, I get a lot of questions, so before I do, let me try to answer them. Then feel free to ask me more! Ready?
First, what did we use to kill off clover on the lawn area? We used a concentrated form of a Broad Leaf Weed Killer. Do not be fooled by this, however, you do have to pick when best to apply. Like sun, and weather. You could kill your lawn so read the bottle. My husband has an extensive background in this so he knows when and what to do.
Second, we always check the forecast. We do not believe in rainproof, from deer repellent spraying on plants to weed killing and bug spray. This needs to dry and you need 24 hours at a minimum. We also suggest doing as soon as the grass dries off, so the sun can hit if for the day and not the dew.
Next, keep pets and kids off the lawn for up to 48 hours, even if it says pet safe, no need to take chances. Do not go barefoot on this until 48 hours pass. Simple rules to keep yourself and your family safe.
Finally, buying concentrate will save you money when it comes to bug spray, weed kill, etc. You simply mix what you need and then go to it. As a side note, we suggest wearing closed toe shoes (boots are preferable) and long pants when spraying. You do not want this stuff on your hands.
Go ahead, get this sprayer, and then kick back and enjoy your Sundays. The chore list just got easier and shorter! ~ XO
