What Exactly Is a Colossal Wedge Salad?
Any hunk of lettuce that is cut into a wedge qualifies as a wedge salad.
Iceberg lettuce is the most common cut for wedge salad recipes, however, a wedge can be made out of a good chunk of romaine lettuce as well.
The thing you need to know is nutrition is really not involved.
However, if you are oscillating between a big fat juicy burger and fries, you made a better choice with the colossal wedge salad.
It’s What Is On Top That Matters – Jam That Colossal Wedge Salad!
My favorite wedge was one I ate at a diner.
There was pretty much nothing else without meat on the menu so I opted for what they termed, “Junk Pile Salad Wedge.”
Oh my, I did not see it coming, but my meal was larger than anyone else’s at the table.
Stacked upon this ski mountain of salad, dripping in white parmesan dressing was a feast for a Queen.
Well, a Queen who bumped her King off the seat to get to the salad, lol!
If memory serves me right, there was not a veggie known to man NOT on this salad.
I pretty much could have used a machete to get through this plate and calm it down!
Really, the colossal wedge salad could have plugged a mammoth pothole with how large it was!
Sometimes simple is best.
Peek into your fridge, do you see a lot of veggies?
Get creative because one wedge of iceberg lettuce and a good mix of chopped veggies is key to a great salad!
Cheese Atop Or Not?
One thing that stands out on a colossal wedge salad recipe is the cheese.
Iceberg lettuce really does not have much flavor.
While iceberg lettuce offers a great crunch and generally a good value for the money, it’s blah in flavor.
What you top that salad trickles down to taste and preference.
Each offers a tangy bite of cheese that has a full-bodied taste against most dressings you may choose to grace the wedge with.
Dressings Thick and Creamy or More of A Vinaigrette on a colossal wedge salad?
Most recipes you will see offer a thick, creamy dressing.
There’s a reason why thick may be better when it comes to a wedge salad.
Since the shape of the salad is a wedge, it’s all basically downhill.
Remember large plates are a must!
Nothing wants to stick to it and there are not individual leaves sticking out to catch the shower of veggies and trinkets you are about to top it with.
Tips For A Yummy Wedge Salad
No matter what veggie you choose, chop it.
Chopped pieces are easier to grab when you cut this wedge into pieces.
Cucumbers work well, as so honey-drizzled pecans, bacon pieces, red onions, etc.
Have fun with the creation of the salad.
Add what you like.
- 1/2 head of iceberg lettuce, rinsed and drained
- 1/2 English cucumber peeled and chopped
- 4 Tablespoons red onions
- 1/4 C Chopped Carrots
- Large Handful of Favorite Crumbled Cheese (blue, gorgonzola, Feta)
- 4 Tablespoons bacon bits (optional)
- 2 Tablespoons Crunchy Nuts (optional)
- 1/2 C Creamy dressing (your choice)
- Salt & Pepper to taste
Place a wedge of lettuce on a large plate.
Follow with chopped cucumber.
Next, add red onions and carrot chunks.
Toss on nuts, and bacon bits (optional of course)
Now generously drizzle with dressing.
Top with freshly milled pepper and salt.
