The summer is upon us and vacationing is about to occur in a lot of home around the world. What if your house has a problem and your neighbor calls you? I bet they are calling you from a smartphone and chances are that smartphone is an iPhone 4 or higher. It’s funny how often you a little key can create chaos in your life, as it is needed to open up the portal to you home. How many keys have you given out? While, many homes have garage door keypads(that allow keyless entry) for entrance, there are other homes that don’t have garages attached to the homes or keypads on the garage door. Some homes have a common entrance and many keys, but do you really know how many people have keys to your home, or when they are coming and going? Do you travel, have pet sitters, babysitters, or somene that cleans your home weekly and do they have a key to get in? Would you love to know when the pet sitter really was there or when the cleaning service came? What happens when the neighbor calls you with a problem going on in your home while you are on vacation? Would you prefer to offer a one-time use key to those that may need to gain entrance while you are not there, but never again, like a plumber you contract for an emergency or an electrician even though you have to be off to work? Do you have children that have smartphones that need to gain access to your home because their smartphone is one thing they are never without? Maybe you have kids that don’t even have smartphones but they are able to carry a key, would you love to know exactly when they get home without having to have a check-in session because you are in meetings and just can not take a call? Do you regularly carry groceries in your arms, or kids? Would it not be nice to have the door unlocked and ready for you to get through rather than fumbling for keys and putting packages or kids down? Your smartphone can now be your key, or a key for anyone else with a smartphone that needs to gain access to your home while you are not there to let them in. Meet Kēvo from Kwikset, a bluetooth enabled deadbolt that eliminates the need for keys to grant access to your home, this is secure way to gain keyless entry into your home.
Does this sound too good to be true? What do you need in order to gain keyless entry into you home? You need to have a compatible device for the Kēvo App (iPhone 4s or higher, third gen. or higher iPad or iPad mini) as well as the Kwikset Kēvo bluetooth enabled deadbolt. You also get to choose the finish you want on the deadbolt: satin nickel, Venetian bronze, or polished brass. The cost is about $219 depending where you purchase it and you can install this with ease. Don’t worry about your existing deadbolt because this is easy to install, fits standard doors and you won’t need new screw holes to complete installation. Internet connect or power is also NOT a requirement in order to use this product.
Things to know about the Kwikset Kēvo. The product is so smart that it can determine if you are inside or outside the door which prevents unauthorized entry. If you have an iPhone 4s or higher, you need to download the mobile app for Kēvo which is free. This app allows you to tap the lock with your fingertip to unlock it or tap it again with your fingertip to lock it. The lock is bump proof and pick resistant.
If you are not going to be home, and whoever needs to get into you home has a smartphone(those that are compatible) you can send an e-key to allow them to gain entrance as well. Maybe you are on vacation and something goes wrong, and your neighbor calls you to alert you. All the neighbor needs is a compatible device and you can send an eKey. You will know when they enter, when they leave all via electronic messaging. This is perfect for visiting guests that you can’t greet until after you arrive home from work, or service staff that must gain entrance while you are not there. Once your guests, or service staff has gone, you can delete or disable their eKeys from mobile or the web app.
We don’t have iPhones, iPads, or iPods can we still use this deadbolt? YES! Perhaps your children don’t have smartphones that are compatible with this device, no problem, you can provide them with a fob that will allow them touch entrance as well. It is that easy but it is also that secure.
Here are a few key features I learned as we worked with this:
The Kēvo lock feature a sensor that can tell if you are inside or outside of your home. If your device is inside, the door can’t be unlocked. Want to know who came in and out, who was granted access and when? Check out the lock history through the Kevo app or log into the .com Kēvo site as well. You can even set the Kevo app up to send you notifications each time teh door is locked and unlocked. The fob that comes with the key is already enrolled and ready to go, but if you get others you must enroll the fob. Any sent eKey can be disabled or deleted.
Calibration on this device can be a bit tricky, but it is not impossible or hard, you just have to take your time and follow the step by step instructions. Calibration is necessary in order to enable Kēvo’s inside-outside security functionality. Your device(phone or fob) must be within range of the lock in order to work. A few tips for calibration: 1) keep it in your front pocket or have someone hold the smartphone close for you and keep within arm’s reach of the lock. (we did this as we read directions and worked on calibrating, but it is super easy)
When activating the app, make sure you have bluetooth enabled on your phone, and it is easier to use the link that is sent, than to try and touch the confirm in email, as that did not work for me after several attempts. Once I used the link sent, I easily created an account and set up my keys, etc.
Those bags of groceries don’t need disarmed, sleeping kids can stay in your arms, and pet sitters, cleaning agencies and anyone else that needs access can get into your home, providing they either have a fob or compatible smartphone. You are able to monitor all activity, inbound and outbound with your new Kēvo deadbolt from Kwikset. Again, if you have an existing deadbolt, installation is an absolute breeze and since we have one we sailed through in under 40 minutes. You don’t have to have an iPhone to use this, you can simply use fobs, one comes with the lock and others may be purchased(and calibrated) as needed. This is perfect for anyone that has other things to do with their time other than fumble for keys to gain entrance and for those of us who need to know who is coming and going and when. Kēvo, an awesome keyless entry system that runs on bluetooth.
