YETI vs. Stanley Tumblers: Leak Battles, Spill Wars & the 20-Ounce Victor
Don’t buy a 20 oz YETI or Stanley tumblers until you read my article first! I’ve had quite the rollercoaster ride with these tumblers – one soared to the top as a clear winner, while the other tumbled down as a disappointing loser. I’m here to spill the hot and the cold on what went down, leading me to this bold conclusion.
Just so we’re on the same page, this isn’t a sponsored post. This is me, Dana, giving you the real scoop – an open and honest review of a Tumbler saga that went sideways. Despite revisiting the experience, my opinion remains rock solid. Read on to find out why!

The Pink YETI I Wanted and Bought At Dick’s
When I first purchased the YETI, it came with a price tag of $35 and it was in pink so it was everything that I wanted.
I wanted to keep my hot beverages hot in my cold beverages cold so with that intent I went to Dick’s Sporting Goods and purchased this particular cup.
I love DICK’S because you can put it with your scorecard. If you have any problems, they can always look it up for a return, and they are exceedingly welcoming with returns, you know within moderation and Dick’s Sporting Goods is one of my favorite stores.
Bought The YETI in October and THe Problems Started 2 Months Later…
After a few months, I started getting drips down the front of the YETI from the cover and, “I’m like did I not close the lid right?”
Then I thought maybe I did not push the lid in enough or what else is going on here? Every shirt I wore, each day, got dripped on, and my pants got dripped on, it was coming from under the seal. But there’s more.
The bottom of the cup was sweating and leaving condensation marks on granite, marble, my desk, napkins, etc. And then the worst part of all it was leaking out the bottom. It seems like it would be impossible but it was really happening.
I tested it with plain hot water, and it did the same thing with coffee, etc.
Every time I took a sip there was a drip (that rhymes what fun) and when I set that hot beverage down, it leaked. RIDICULOUS.
Enter The Stanley 20 Oz Tumbler With A Straw???
My kids have YETIS and Stanleys, and they decided to gift me a Stanley for Christmas to replace the hot mess going on with the YETI. I planned to return the YETI (Which I did) and replace it.
Enter the hero of our story, the Stanley 20-ounce tumbler. Gifted by my kids who had front-row seats to the YETI debacle, the Stanley was more than just a replacement; it was a revelation.
Things I LOVE About The Stanley 20 Oz Tumbler
My kids took note of the situation and for Christmas, they replaced that YETI that I had not replaced with a Stanley 20-ounce Tumbler and honestly it’s been one of the best things items That I have ever had gifted to me.
But I have to be honest I did not believe that at first!
I took a look at the Stanley and could not figure out why they gifted me one with a straw in it for hot beverages. But that’s what one of the top things I LOVE about the STANLEY TUMBLER IS at current.
- The Stanley 20 Tumbler lid actually can be used with a straw or completely closed and SPILL PROOF or it can be used with its drinking spout! It’s a 3 in one function.
- The base of the Stanley tumbler actually fits in my car cupholder which unto itself is a miracle as my car proves challenging on many levels.
- The Stanley Tumbler has kept my hot beverages (hot water, hot tea, hot coffee) HOT (just like they were freshly poured) for over 6.5 hours. Wait… WHAT? Yes, 6+ hours.
The Downside(The Con) It’s beige, not pink, but I can remedy that down the line.
YETI Vs. Stanley Tumblers 20 oz LIDS Comparisons
If you buy a Stanley Tumbler you won’t need to buy alternate lids, it has both a straw and a spout, plus it is SPILL PROOF!
Conversely when comparing a YETI vs. Stanley Tumblers, if you want a different style of sipping (and ONLY IF AVAILABLE) you have to buy a different cover for your YETI.
The 20 YETI Tumbler is not spill proof and it did leak, now after a few days with the new one there has not been leaking but I suspect the same thing will happen over a bit of time, we’ll wait and see.
The YETI Vs. Stanley Tumblers: Tumbler Style
I have to say that once the Stanley tumbler fit into my cup holder in the car and then released without a total tug-o-war it immediately won me over, because the YETI is not working in the cupholder either!
The Hot And The Cold Yeti Vs. Stanley Tumblers 20 Ounces
The YETI can only maintain the heat inside that cup for 4 hours maximum and it even has a closure on the mag lid, so no air is getting in or out, IMO, not great, but better than a mug. So if you are a mug drinker you might consider converting.
The Stanley 20 oz Tumbler blew me away with over 6.5 hours of staying warm for water, tea, and coffee and it only touts up to 4 hours on the purchase tag!
As for keeping things cold, Stanley wins again, over a margarita is how I learned this at New Year’s vs. the YETI on a campfire night that was out for hours and ice melted (it was that same YETI!)
Suggestion Of Where To Buy A YETI Tumbler or a Stanley Tumbler?
Dick’s Sporting Goods. They have fabulous customer service, and your scorecard will help them easily retrieve your purchases online and in-store.
If you don’t see what you like in the store, shop online and you are sure to find it. Honestly, I would not buy these anywhere else, because after starting the online paperwork for YETI… NO THANKS!
YETI Vs. Stanley Tumblers (20 oz) 1 Winner + 1 Loser
In case you can not tell I am very partial to STANLEY. IT has outperformed YETI in every possible way, except with the colors available in Dick’s Sporting Goods, which is a minor snafu.
As for my overall opinion, while it’s only been a few weeks that I have owned the Stanley, it is long enough to not only see the differences in the 20 oz tumblers already but the value built into a Stanley vs a YETI.
Did I just get a faulty YETI? I have to say NO because the staff and some other people I chatted with in the aisle had similar experiences. The YETI Is the ONE Loser in this whole YETI vs. Stanley, I really feel like it’s not what it says it is, based on MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE.
Can I comment on the handle of the Stanley? No, total hearsay, but from a reliable source set.
DO I plan on getting an additional Stanley in Pink? In time, once I see how this one truly performs, I will consider it. I am actually very much wanting to try the one with a handle to see how it performs, but there are a few STANLEY Models that have piqued my interest so time will tell.
I hope my true story helps you make a good buying decision! ~ Dana XO
