What to Expect On Your First Trip To NYC
New York City is the living embodiment of diversity and excitement. Imagine an intense fusion of cultures, languages, and cuisines from around the globe, creating a vibrant tapestry of experiences you can’t find anywhere else. It’s a city where art, fashion, technology, and innovation thrive, making every street and corner a new encounter waiting to surprise you.
Honestly, you might feel overwhelmed initially, and just reading about it is enough to do that, let alone stepping foot there.
But, if you break down each area, you can take a lot in, over a few days, depending on the pace you want to move. It will become very apparent within minutes why you’ll want to have an NYC travel guide with you and read it before you go!
In our book, there is no wrong way to visit NYC; the only thing you can do wrong is NOT visit!
Planning Your Trip
New York is a marvel to behold, no matter the season. However, the city unveils its delightful charm in the spring and fall when the weather is mild and comfortable. Winter transforms the city into a magical wonderland with snow-dusted streets and festive holiday decorations. Meanwhile, the summer brings a sweltering heat that can be quite intense.
As for how long to stay, a week is a good start, but remember, NYC is an enormous city. Even those who’ve lived here for decades continue to uncover hidden gems.
Whether you want to bar hop, dine-walk-dine, visit art, music, shopping, or sites, there’s so much to do you’ll never get it all in, in a single trip, so make a list, and rewrite it once you have taken your first trip!
Iconic Attractions
Now, let’s get down to the fascinating part of our journey. Put on your most comfortable shoes because we’re about to cover much ground!
- Roosevelt Tram: Begin your adventure by floating hundreds of feet above the East River on the Roosevelt Tram, an aerial journey that offers unparalleled panoramas of the Manhattan skyline.
- Staten Island Ferry: Once you’ve had a bird’s eye view of the city, set sail on the Staten Island Ferry. This delightfully free journey offers unmissable views that you will see of the incredible Statue of Liberty and the NYC skyline. But You have to experience this ride two times for the full effect. Take the ferry once during the day and then again by night and enjoy what you will experience (not saying what it is like so you can go experience it!)
- Battery Park: Stroll in Battery Park, a refreshing sanctuary amid the city’s hustle and bustle. It houses several monuments and gardens, plus an impressive waterfront promenade. Stop and look at Lady Liberty from a different vantage point.
- 9/11 Memorial & Museum: Next, prepare for an emotional journey at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, a poignant tribute to the victims of the tragic 2001 attacks. Spend a few hours here because it is solemn, incredible and will speak to you. You’ll feel an emotional connection.
- Rockefeller Center (The Rock): This Art Deco masterpiece offers an array of attractions, including the legendary NBC studios, a beautiful ice-skating rink, and the Top of the Rock observatory. We also suggest a nighttime sunset view from the top of the Rock for something stunning and romantic.
- Apple Store on 5th Avenue: Tech enthusiasts won’t miss the Apple Store on 5th Avenue, a modern architectural wonder showcasing the latest Apple technology.
- Times Square: Lastly, no NYC trip is complete without a visit to the city’s bustling heart – Times Square. Stand at the ‘Crossroads of the World’ and let the city’s vibrant energy wash over you.
Cultural Heart of NYC
After ticking off the big-ticket attractions, it’s time to immerse yourself in the city’s cultural soul. Experience Chinatown’s rich history and tantalizing cuisine, or enter a romantic Italian movie set in the charming Little Italy neighborhood. Both districts offer unique culinary delights, from Bubble Tea in Chinatown to delectable Italian treats in Little Italy.
Getting Around
You’ll have many transport options in NYC, but the subway and Uber services top the list. The subway is NYC’s lifeline, running 24/7 and connecting all five boroughs.
On one of our first trips, we used the subway nonstop and occasionally set up an Uber. When we visit, we use the subways almost exclusively unless we need to get to a show. Then, we always set up the Ubers.
Uber, on the other hand, is your go-to for a more private and cozy mode of transport, especially handy after a late-night Broadway show.
Stay in Style: Accommodations in NYC
New York City is no ordinary place, and your accommodation shouldn’t be either! If you’re not a regular in the Big Apple or if this is your dream trip, why not splurge a bit and make your stay as glamorous as the city itself?
Even the most basic hotels can be a bit pricey in NYC. Finding a room below $200 per night can feel like striking gold. But if you’re here for a special occasion like a honeymoon or a once-in-a-lifetime trip, why not up the ante? Consider booking a plush room at the Concorde Midtown East Hotel.
Beyond hotels, you might also explore luxe Airbnb options that allow you to live like a local in style. You will find there are plenty, and some of them even come with a parking spot. Do not expect to find an Airbnb with more than one bathroom, as most apartments have only one bathroom, just a heads up.
There are hotel specials; you have to monitor your chosen hotel and see when the price fluxes; we did this and paid $300 less for a 4-day stay; it was like a free day!
Whatever your preference, there’s no shortage of swanky digs in New York City, where you can rest your head in luxury after a day of exploring.
Getting the Most Out of Your NYC Adventure
One of the best ways to experience NYC like a pro is to grab a New York pass. Especially if you’re a first-timer in the city, this pass is a golden ticket to some of the city’s iconic spots. It’s not just about access, though. This pass is a budget-friendly way to experience the best of NYC without burning a hole in your wallet.
With a New York Pass, you can unlock a world of experiences, including:
- Marveling at the cityscape from the Empire State Building
- Exploring the wonders of the universe at the American Museum Of Natural History
- Meeting Lady Liberty herself with a visit to the Statue of Liberty
- Spending a day cycling around the city’s green heart with a Central Park Bike Rental
- Cheering on the home team at a New York Yankees Game
With so much on offer, the New York pass is the key to unlocking unforgettable memories in this incredible city. So buckle up because the city that never sleeps is waiting to take you on a wild ride of discovery and adventure!
Admittedly the Pass may make sense for someone who wants to see a lot but doesn’t want to have to sit down and plan an itinerary, so this option makes great sense.
With all this said, I want to remind you to savor every moment of your NYC adventure. This city is about so much more than its landmarks. It’s the neighborhoods, the food, and the blend of cultures – these are what make NYC truly unique. Enjoy every bit of it, and let these memories be the best souvenirs you take home. Get ready; New York City awaits!~Dana XO
