What a challenge it has been, traveling with food allergies beyond anyone’s imagination. My son is allergic to so many things from ingredients to latex that traveling is very difficult especially when trying to find a meal. Outside of packing food, the challenges of being a mom of a child with severe food allergies is unbelievable. To those that chastise me and say, “that’s your problem” actually you might find it interesting to know that more often than not, people dining in your arm’s length vicinity have severe food allergies. Now on adventure we needed to find Allergen Free Dining On Ocracoke Island. While we were hardly on a desolate island, we were on an island off of the North Carolina Coast, called Ocracoke. The chance I took to feed my son was pretty unrealistic, but I knew that someone there would be able to feed him. Lavishly live this tale of allergen free dining on Ocracoke Island as we eat on the street at a street vendor’s restaurant with great results!
To some it is just a case of, ” really food allergies, get over it” but understanding that a person can die from a food item that should not be in their body really makes you take on perspective. I am not sure what it is that we have so many people recognizing food allergies, but those establishments that GET food allergies and are cooking without latex, and have menus available for those that have food allergies, you get my truest KUDOS! We had no idea if we would be able to find Allergen Free Dining On Ocracoke Island.
We had packed snacks and knew we would not be gone all day, but allergen free dining on Ocracoke Island was possible so we went for it! Nicole’s is the name and hot dogs and fun food is the game! There is no way you can really miss his roadside restaurant as it is right across the street from the Golf Cart Rental Place.
This particular vendor sounded like BLACKBEARD himself, and when he repeated our order back to us, my kids were astounded to hear his voice! Ocracoke was actually a favorite tromping ground for Blackbeard, did you know that? This particular street vendor gave my kids chills when he talked but he was so cool!
He offered walking tacos for VEGETARIANS, and those with food allergies.. Um… did he know this press girl was headed to the island or was it for real?
The menu offers up Hot dogs, walking tacos, and vegetarian walking tacos, as well as $1 water and drinks, I mean, how could you miss here right?
It’s cash only, but that is not a big deal as the meals were Under $4 and kicking delicious. I enjoyed a vegetarian walking taco, while my daughter had one with chicken. My boys ate Hot Dogs and NO allergens: no latex, no honey, no seafood, no nuts. This guy said his Grandson has these allergies he gets it!Yeah!!!!
These are faces of very hungry children when on the Island of Ocracoke and those who ate food and loved it. I was so happy to find this stand, I can’t say thanks enough. The reasonable prices, and the great food make this a MUST Stop at when on Ocracoke Island.
THIS little rack separates all your food and it provides hot dogs with mayo and mustard or with chili, get creative and go wild, my kids did!
There is truly nothing worse than traveling with a child that has food allergies and Ocracoke made it easy from Slushees to Food. We managed to survive about 4 hours plus and eat while we were on the Island. It was not only reasonable, but delicious and quite creative. KUDOS!
Please remember, everyone is different as are their food intolerances and allergies, always ASK before ordering as what works for us, may not work for you. The story is based on my son’s allergies and our finds for him. The menu was fab, and the prices were cool, so don’t worry about latex, seafood and nuts, he has worked his way around it and I know he is one of the FEW on the island that is ahead of this time! My personal thanks to the man that sounded like Blackbeard but served up allergen free dining on Ocracoke Island! Lavishly live a trip to Ocracoke Island out loud and enjoy allergen free dining with this great side road restaurant.
