Triumphs of a Granite Outdoor Dining Table
Last year was my year from HELL. The table shattered and hurt my eye, our home had the roof ripped off and exposed decking due to a storm, and my mom had Stage 3 cancer. The table shattering was the only thing I could control and I did, and this is the result! When things happen in triples I look for the one I can control, and in this case, it was the shattered glass.
If you remember on social media last year I posted about my tempered glass exploding and shooting UP Into my eye creating lacerations and an infection and the requirement of having my eye flushed. Never again!

Choosing Granite Over Glass for Our Dining Table
Last summer, I learned a harsh lesson after our glass patio table shattered unexpectedly, resulting in a scratched cornea and an urgent trip to the eye doctor to get my eye flushed. The incident was a frightening wake-up call that made one thing crystal clear: no more glass tables in our yard. So, I set out to find a safer, more durable alternative.
While exploring various options, nothing quite caught my eye until I thought about granite—the same material I adored in my kitchen and bathroom countertops.
The issue was that no one was offering granite outdoor dining tables, and I wanted one. Granite’s durability and aesthetic appeal made it an ideal choice for outdoor furniture. It can withstand the elements without the need for constant movement, and best of all, it promises a lifetime of use without any risk of sudden, dangerous breakage.
Designing the Granite Outdoor Dining Table
Inspired to take matters into my own hands, I began a DIY project to build my own granite outdoor dining table. My first stop was the granite store, where I selected the perfect slab. I chose to have the edges rounded to avoid any nasty bumps or scrapes.
I chose the color of granite that I wanted and then I went and did a little homework on umbrella openings to make sure that I was going to get this table just right!
I gave the granite store the sizing I wanted for our table, and the height, which I had to take into account the legs that would support the table as well.
Once the table was done, we had to pick the granite slab up, which was not an issue but an inconvenience. The granite business owner told me it was not an install and therefore it would be $500 to deliver only 3 miles away from them, I had to laugh (welcome to Pittsburgh) We have a construction firm, and we took one of the trucks and picked it up!
Assembling the Granite Outdoor Dining Table
While the tabletop was being constructed, I had to get suitable legs that could support the hefty weight of the granite. I had these custom-made locally, by one of the best (my husband works with him often in his linen of construction so we knew his prominence in the industry). He ensured they were as sturdy as the tabletop itself and built a support as well.
Once home, we attached the legs and positioned our new granite outdoor dining table on the patio. It was a proud moment, standing back to admire not just a piece of furniture, but a symbol of resilience and safety—a guarantee that no more injuries would come from enjoying a sunny day outside.
Enjoying the Durability and Safety of the Granite Outdoor Dining Table
Building this table wasn’t just about replacing a broken one—it was about creating something lasting and safe for my family. It’s more than just a table; it’s a testament to the beauty and reliability of granite in withstanding the test of time and elements. And I can confidently say, there will be no more emergency trips to the eye doctor from our patio furniture.
I should also mention the final cost of our table was Under $1000 and that is truly a deal in my opinion. ~DANA XO
