The Decline and Rise of Sewing
Sewing—once the darling of domestic arts—has been shoved to the back of the hobby closet, overshadowed by digital art, cooking, and even knitting.
But let’s not forget, this craft once had its own TV shows and glossy magazines! So, why the decline?
I am not a fan of fast fashion and the mess it has left in its path (that’s a whole other conversation), but I do love fashion and instant gratification, which is what you get when you sew your own clothing!
If I had to guess, Fast fashion kicked a lot of wannabe sewers to the back; after all, why sew when you can buy clothes fast and cheap?
Sewing never went away, but many of us don’t do it, so you might think it is no longer popular. It is. And I use Pinterest for my inspiration.
Check there and see how many people sew and what they sew!
Plus, we are all too familiar with the Lockdown we went through, and well, making masks was a big thing, and dusting off that sewing machine was a must!
Personal Journey: From Detest to Love
I can remember a time when I detested sewing and mending and then another time when I found pride in my artisan-crafted threads.
I currently have 2 different sewing machines that I have a love-hate relationship with, from threading to stitching, but I still use them!
It’s a big deal to accomplish something handmade! Trust me.
The first time I sewed, I locked the needle and had to get the machine repaired, but once I learned what I had done, I never had that issue again.
Just like anything, there is a learning curve. Be patient and enjoy the stitching moments.

Sewing is not just about mending a tear or sewing on a button. It’s an art form just like painting, coloring, and sculpting.
And you will either love or hate it; there is no middle ground.
Imagine designing your own patterns or recreating your favorite pop culture icons on fabric.
You can go from making your own T-shirts to crafting intricate home decor like curtains or pillow covers. The canvas is as broad as your imagination.

Plus, I’ll share this: As a mom, there’s always a need to mend, or fix, or sew something.
You can do it much faster and learn to love it even with just a few time slots.
I didn’t always like sewing, but I have come to use my machines nonstop for things I never realized I could.
