The Quest for Authentic Spaghetti: Why I Wanted Spaghetti in Rome
My journey for a genuine plate of spaghetti in Rome took an unexpected turn when I stumbled upon a restaurant boldly named ‘Spaghetti’. It seemed almost too good to be true for an American like me, used to calling this classic dish ‘spaghetti’ rather than the all-encompassing ‘pasta’ popular here in Italy.
The sight of the word ‘Spaghetti‘ standing out in a city where ‘pasta’ is a universal term sparked both my curiosity and a touch of nostalgia. It promised a comforting taste of home amidst the myriad of pasta varieties in Italy.
Yet, there was an underlying irony in finding such a straightforwardly named restaurant in the heart of Rome, a city celebrated for its culinary complexity.
Was it a tourist trap, cleverly playing on familiar terms, or a hidden gem offering an authentically satisfying spaghetti experience? With a mix of intrigue and skepticism, I decided to reserve a table, eager to discover whether this establishment could live up to the comfort and simplicity its name suggested.
As I prepared to take on this culinary adventure, I couldn’t help but wonder: would this be a journey that lead to a delightful spaghetti dish, or a realization that sometimes, even in Rome, appearances might be deceiving?
The irony of a restaurant boldly embracing the name ‘Spaghetti‘ amidst a sea of establishments opting for the more generic ‘pasta’ was not lost on me. You know you’re in Italy when everything on the menu is labeled ‘pasta.’ But for us Americans, there’s something special about a dish called ‘spaghetti.’
It was a cheeky reminder of the cultural nuances and linguistic quirks that make dining in Italy such a delightfully unique experience.
Now allow me to share a very simple culinary journey where spaghetti is not just pasta – it’s just for the nostalgic American seeking spaghetti in modest portions with prices to match.
The Unassuming Charm of Spaghetti: What The Ambiance Is Like For Spaghetti in Rome
Super casual is the best word to describe the eatery. Upon stepping into Spaghetti, one immediately senses the relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere. This is no fine dining establishment, but rather a cozy spot where tourists gather to enjoy a hearty meal without breaking the bank.
The interior boasts an industrial-like décor, with exposed brick walls lending a touch of rustic charm to the space. It’s quite basic, tables, chairs, exposed duct work, etc.
The tables are well-spaced and while you can hear conversations you can’t hear what they are talking about, which is great.
To enter the inside seating area of Spaghetti in Rome, you go down a set of stairs (good to know in case you are not able to do steps). Also note, that the bathroom is inside as well.
The Al fresco seating (we did not partake in it as it was very cool that winter evening) is well-lit, but I did not see any tableside heating lamps.
Planning Your Visit: Reservations Recommended For Spaghetti in Rome
While spontaneity is often the spice of life, securing a reservation at Spaghetti can make all the difference, especially if you prefer indoor seating. I imagine in the peak travel seasons this place is jammed so make a reservation. We were off-peak so it didn’t seem necessary other than what I will explain below.
I believe that I figured out this one element of spontaneous vs. reserved dining in Italy: it seems if you make a reservation you are immediately seated inside unless you have an outdoor preference that you share.
Each time we made reservations we were immediately welcomed inside the establishments if we were walk-ins, they put us outside.
Tip: if you are not a smoker you will want to sit inside (as long it is a nonsmoking interior) as many people smoke in Italy and you will be inhaling their 2nd hand smoke (no that’s not a Karen moment it is something to take note of for any nonsmoker!)
Booking online is a breeze and ensures you a comfortable spot away from the elements, whether it’s the sweltering heat of summer or the chilly embrace of winter. Those without reservations may find themselves relegated to outdoor seating, where the allure of al fresco dining mingles with the aroma of freshly cooked pasta.
Simple Spaghetti In Rome But…
The menu is very concise so I appreciated its straightforwardness. The menu does not overwhelm the palate or the wallet.
No, it is not the cheapest or the biggest portion of Spaghetti we have had in Italy, but the menu is refreshingly simple. Most dishes averaged less than $15 per person.
While the menu extends beyond spaghetti to include some appetizers and some means, it’s the classic pasta dishes that we chose based on reviews and images.
While the portion sizes seemed smaller than what I’d seen in some reviews, there may be variation, or maybe our appetites were just supercharged from our explorations! Either way, if you’re extra hungry, you might want to consider adding an appetizer to your order.
Side Salads Are Available at Spaghetti in Rome But…
So I am a salad girl and I get one with my lunch and dinner. This was a very different salad that I have experienced anywhere in Italy. Very basic, very fresh, just simple, just like the menu. While fresh, the salads lack the vibrant colors and flavors one might expect.
A Taste to Remember: Spaghetti In Rome, Not Just Pasta Dishes
Portion sizes at Spaghetti are modest at best and definitely not excessive. The sauce is very thick, and clings to the pasta. The pasta is al dente and chewy and tastes homemade (not sure??).
If you order pasta and have walked a lot and are really hungry you will need to order something else or stop elsewhere and get Gelato (we did)!
There are meat entrees like veal meatballs and hamburgers available on the menu. ( I don’t eat meat so this was not an option for me)
Libations to Pair: Wine While Dining On Spaghetti Not Just Pasta
Regarding the wine, the house option might not fully delight those with a penchant for richer flavors. It was a tad lighter than I prefer, but then, exploring wine is always a bit of an adventure! For those looking for more zest in their glass, perhaps exploring beyond the house wine might be the way to go.
Another person in my family ordered an Aperol Spritz and compared it to the last 20 we had tasted around Italy, stating it was worthy of at least 4/5 stars so maybe go for the Spritz.
Service with a Smile: Overall Service
What Spaghetti may lack in the house wine more than makes up for in attentive and efficient service. English-speaking staff ensures a smooth dining experience for international visitors, further enhancing the restaurant’s appeal.
The servers were not rude to Americans (yahoo) and met all of our needs.
I will make one small note for anyone needing the restroom. It was about 8p at night, and the bathroom was less than favorable but it was a bathroom before walking back home to the Triofone area which was out 16 minutes.
It’s Not Just Pasta
In the vast culinary landscape of Rome, ‘Spaghetti’ stands out as an OK nod to simplicity and tradition. If you’re ever wandering the charming streets of Rome near Vatican City with a craving for something on the lighter side, remember, it’s not just pasta, it’s a taste of Rome. Here’s to many more flavorful adventures – buon appetito!~DANA xo
Final Thoughts: Would We Return To The Restaurant Called Spaghetti in Rome?
While our experience at ‘Spaghetti’ was worth writing about, would we return? Probably not – and here’s why. Rome, with its endless culinary landscape, is like an open menu of infinite possibilities.
The servings were fine and the food was decent, it was not the best meal nor the worst, but I like to keep uncovering new places. It made it on my blog so it met basic standards or I would not share it at all!
Each day offers a new taste, a discovery. So, while ‘Spaghetti’ serves up a satisfying meal and a charmingly authentic experience, our adventure-hungry souls are always on the lookout for the next hidden gem.
It’s not a verdict on ‘Spaghetti’ – it did a fine job of dishing out those comforting, nostalgic flavors. It’s just that in a city teeming with so many unexplored eateries, our journey must go on.
We’re off to uncover more culinary stories in the Eternal City. Onward to new flavors and fresh experiences!
