As a mom of 2 teens, I can tell you I am learning a lot through them. Homecoming is one of the big school year occasions and the proposal has taken on a true challenge that gives you the chance to really get creative.
The whole process has become very formalized, and unique to each person asking the other. Social media has elevated the homecoming proposal plateau even higher. Asking someone to homecoming is not just, “Will you go with me to homecoming?”
Rather, the etiquette of asking someone to homecoming definitely requires a proper proposal. The proposal requires thought and creativity and wingmen/women. Truly this is about elegance in presentation and not just a rough invite and proposals.
I hope you have a great time at Homecoming. Good luck creating very fun, creative and unique homecoming proposal ideas to help you out a bit!
Fun and Creative Homecoming Proposal Ideas
First… you have to talk the talk. FRIENDS are Everything..
One of the most crucial parts of this master plan is making sure you have an in with your date’s friend group that you can rely on to help you 1) set up the ask and 2) give you their location and the perfect time to ask them.
When you’re considering what friends to have help you, first try to think of who your date is around the most. Then, enlist them for help. Just remember, you don’t want to be asking multiple friends to help you because you might end up spoiling your own surprise!
Then… you have to walk the walk. – Creative Homecoming Proposal Ideas
Now comes the hard part… you have to plan. When you’re planning it’s important to ask your dates’ friend to help you in figuring out a couple of their favorite hobbies or likes and dislikes.
Once you’ve compiled a small list, then it’s time to figure out which like or hobby you’ll go with and pick a theme! Guess what, it’s time to figure out what you’re going to say around the Theme and how you’re going to say it! Once you’ve got it all figured out and everything is ready, then its Go time.
Your dates friends will cue you into the best possible time to ask. “Lindsay will be at cheer practice at 7:15 P. We get there at 6:45 P and hang a bit, so that would be a great time”. Be sure that when the day and time comes that you’re prompt and ready to go! Don’t worry, everyone’s a little nervous when doing this but it will end up being so much fun and totally worth the nerves!
Fin(stagram)ally… Homecoming Proposal Ideas
Don’t forget that this is one of those moments that you’re going to want to look back on and remember! So it might be smart to enlist a close friend of your or a parent to help you snag that perfect Insta to let everyone know that you did it and that you have a date to the dance!

The Most Common Supplies You Will Need
Your theme needs creative help and this is it! Hopefully, you can use some of these to ease into your ASK and theme. Make sure to have zip ties (to fasten balls, pens, flowers, etc. to the sign), glue stick, markers, and poster board.
Creative Tip: Either use your printer or the right color markers to match your school colors. Homecoming is at YOUR school, celebrate it.
These are just ideas to get you started, a springboard to help you consider the person you are asking. Of course, you can always use chocolate and a basic sign, but if you want to amp it up, try one of these ideas and change the theme!
Expert Tip: Homecoming is also referred to as ‘HOCO’ so you can shorten up what you have to write.
Creative Homecoming Proposal Ideas
Your future date plays Lacrosse, so an easy way to capture her attention would be a sign. The where and when? It would be up to you, but, on the field before practice would be great! Follow all of the above, to make sure you have your wingman/woman with you and go for it.
It’s easy to follow your ‘dates’ passions to in order make these signs. In fact, it is really helpful with theming a sign. So try using their afterschool activities or athletic choices to fill in the sign.
It Might Be Cheesy…
Order a warm pizza and inside the delivery box, write your message. Your message could read, “I know this might be ‘CHEESY’ but will you go to homecoming with me?” Served up in a piping HOT pizza.
The SWEET Proposal
Fill up a jar of candy, and add a HUGE tag. A perfect way to ‘sweet’ your date off their feet, lol! It’s colorful, and fun and gives them a souvenir of the ask which again is perfect for IG’ability. If you are lucky they will share some of these treats with you!
There are so many different candies you can choose from, and you can always seek out the school colors. Use black and gold mints in wrappers, or find your colors, red and white, green and white, green and yellow, you get the idea.
Just change the colors to match your school or something that you know the person you are asking will love, like Pinks, purples, blues or red, etc. There are endless options for candy. Tie a balloon to the top and it will really even look more decked out.
All About The Doughnut
You can always use a box of donuts or a plastic donut. Make a sign, as I shared above, using graphics in any online word and photo editor, PowerPoint, or collage maker, or you can create it with markers. It might say, ‘I donut want to go with anyone else to homecoming’, or ‘Please DOUGHNUT say No To HOCO’.
Easy, fast, and perfect for a foodie friend! Also, consider the trendy tag, #foodiefriday and how popular it might become! You can find inflatable donuts online and in a lot of different stores.
Of course, donuts are everywhere for purchase. You could even use the DONUT Box to write your note! This one can be done on the fly, spur of the moment and just using that box. Simple!
For Those That Share Their Passions
When you can’t really think of anything buy your own faves, try using your strengths to create the proposal. Maybe it’s how you met too? On the field or while practicing? The more you can identify with the sign, the easier it will be to ask!
How about the Football player who has to ask someone to go? Use the ‘Will You Tackle HOCO with me?’ and a football attached to a sign or a picture of a football. Keep things easy and manageable but staying true to those things you all love!
BEAR this in Mind
When all else fails, use the Teddy Bear proposal. Often teddy bears are overused, but if you are really grasping for ideas this will be a great filler! Purchase a teddy bear, leave it in the box. Write on the box, a note like you see in this image I made.
I listed a larger Teddy Bear of 3 feet on my personal Amazon Storefront page for you to take a look at. Considering that most will invest some good money into these proposals this is even with a bouquet of flowers, chocolates, and so on. Also, it can get shipped right to your house, so if you don’t have a ride to the store, this makes it easy!
You could also head out to the dollar trees, and larger retailers to find a bear without the larger expense. There are bears for every budget out there!
Yard Stake Out
One of my teens’ friends just used these great yard signs. He decorated the lawn while she was sleeping. HE did as the parents first since he was going into their yard, but you do whatever you want. Some people don’t mind if you put stuff in their lawns!
Not to be outdone, his other friend also ordered a different set, which was also different and perfect for a front yard ask. You might see that it has to do with a FOOTBALL player asking someone to the dance. However, it means you gotta go wait there before school to see the reaction and capture the photo! It does take the work out of creation if you just order, so maybe that will help you out too! Whatever you have time for and whatever your budget is, there’s something out there to help you with the Homecoming proposal, and I am sure you see that!
Homecoming Proposal Ideas
Now you have read all this, and you are inspired, go make yours. Don’t wait too late to ask, you need to order corsages, dresses need to match ties, and dinners need to be planned. There’s a lot more to this than the day before!
Have fun, enjoy the ASK, and make sure to ‘gram’ it (#HomecomingProposal, #HocoProposal, etc) so everyone else can see! ~ DANA XO
