My boys are totally all about their ‘junk food’ days because they choose one day a week to splurge, on fun food! I always have fun recipes ready to go. This particular recipe gets requested over and over again especially during sports seasons from tailgating to at-home parties!
The simple combination of delicious, fun ingredients and the ease of creation all allow me to have fun with cooking while providing a delicious treat. I want to make sure you know how good an air fryer hot dog on its own is. While I am not in the habit of serving up hot dogs, when we do make them, we use our air fryer.
From what I am told and what I see, the hot dog retains its juiciness and the skin firms almost like grilling. Your end result will be a tasty hot dog, much better than the microwave and easier than the grill!
Now, add in the Dorito coating, and you have a Big Game Day treat. Even better, these are fabulous for party holidays, like New Year’s Eve, birthdays, celebrations, etc. Bookmark this page, as this food is party perfect, and on a stick, so perfectly portable. Let’s make Air Fried Hot Dogs with Dorito Crunch and lavishly live celebrations out loud with a fun food!

However, you do need to play around with cooking times and temperatures to get it all right. Not every Air Fryer is reliable and not all air fryer’s have the same capacity! Just because I Used this one for this recipe there are so many others available, look into ALL Of them. I have several brands I use.
Truth to this recipe, my son is a hot dog fanatic and he loves Dorito’s, they are his 2 favorite ingredients. I thought, let me make him the best of both worlds and this is what I created. It is now a Casa Vento staple! When I serve a hot dog, it needs to be a TREAT, and that is what this recipe is… a Treat!
The best time to create this recipe is when you are at the bottom of a bag of those great chips. Crumbs are already made saving you time, so keep things easy! Just keep a pack of hot dogs in the freezer or fridge and away you go!
Also, before YOU try this recipe, make sure you have smaller and larger skewers. Or, if the skewer WON’T fit into your basket, never fear, add it in AFTER you cook these. In fact, I have done this both way, and I like cooking without a skewer because I don’t have to worry about length of fryer basket.
Last, do not stack these more than across the basket. If you stack these on each other they will not cook the same way, (let’s just go with… I tried it and hated the results). Fill the width of the liner and no more.
8 Hot Dog
8 wooden Skewer
10-15 Doritos (crushed fine in plastic bag) (1 Cup +) (or any cheese torillas you like)
¼ C Buttermilk
Crush Doritos in a bag, making sure there are no large pieces. The smaller the better in fact, because you want these pieces tight and covering.
Add buttermilk to an oval dish (you will be dipping hot dogs in here)
Bath hot dog in the buttermilk bath all sides and then into the chip crushed bag. Press firmly. You may need to dip again, if enough chips did not adhere. It depends how crunchy you want the hot dog and how many chips.
If necessary dip again as instructed above or skip to the next step if no extra chipping is required.
Add in Skewer and then place in the air fryer. Here is where I have updated the recipe. All air fryers boast non-stick, however, buttermilk and chips like to stick, just to challenge me I assume. So, to lessen the opportunity for sticking, I lightly spray the basket with nonstick spray. Not a lot just enough. Then there are NO issues!
