How To Make Italian 16 Bean Soup With Pork
Now we will share the step-by-step instructions on how to make this simple soup.
Step 1: Prep the beans for the 16 bean soup
If you are cooking your Italian Tuscan country-style pork bean soup with your dutch oven, you want to soak the beans overnight or use the quick soak method according to package directions. Set aside.
If you are using your Instant Pot pressure cooker to make the soup, you can and should soak the beans as well, covered with at least 2″ of water over the top of the bean and soak for 12 hours, then rinse before cooking.
Step 2: Prepping The Dutch Oven For the Country Style Ribs
You’ll add olive oil to a Dutch oven set over medium heat.
Next, season pork ribs with salt and black pepper to taste, and add to the Dutch oven.
Sear on both sides until the meat easily releases from the bottom.
Transfer ribs to a plate and sets aside.
Step 3: Cook The Vegetables
With the meat set aside, add the remaining olive oil, celery, carrot, onion, and garlic to the Dutch oven.
Season with salt and black pepper to taste, and stir to combine.
Cook, occasionally stirring, until the vegetables soften and begin to develop some color.
Step 4: Bring The Ingredients Together
Return ribs to the Dutch oven and add soaked and drained beans, chicken broth (or water), bay leaves, and dried herbs.
Season with additional salt and black pepper, and stir to combine (optional but unnecessary).
Add in the Parmesan Rind.
Next, you’ll cook this until the meat (the country-style pork) falls easily off the bones and the beans are tender but not mushy (about a one and a half max)
Step 5: Meat Prep And Serving
Remove from heat and remove the bones from the Dutch oven.
Pull the pork apart with two forks to create bite-sized pieces.
Taste and adjust seasonings as desired.
Stir in fresh chopped basil and serve immediately.
Enjoy!
Country-Style Pork Tuscan Bean Soup FAQS
Do I Have To Use Herbs de Provence in My Herb Blend?
No. The herb blend used in our recipe can be changed and will not impact our recipe.
Here is how to substitute the herbs de Provence flavor profile: use two tablespoons of Italian seasoning (vs. the four dried herbs listed in the recipe, and it will all be fine!)
Are All The Bean Blends Gluten Free?
No. To keep this recipe gluten-free, carefully read the packaging on commercially available dried bean soup blends.
Some brands, such as the Goya 16 Bean Soup Mix, contain barley. However, gluten-free blends, including Bob’s Red Mill 13-bean mix, are available.
Can I Substitute Other Pork For Country-Style Pork Ribs?
Yes! We love using pancetta; you can cut and cube it, pan fry it, and get all of the delicious taste profiles by using this instead of country-style pork ribs!
Other Ingredient Options To Consider
- Pancetta instead of country ribs
- Add in fresh spinach, kale, or escarole at the end
- a can of fresh tomatoes diced
- Mash the beans for a thicker, more pureed soup
- use shallots instead of onions
- Add in chopped zucchini
- try a few chopped potatoes in addition to the beans (very filling)
