I have searched all over for resources and suggestions for boys and 16th birthdays, but nothing really exists. Instead of turning to a book, Pinterest or someone else’s ideas, I figured out how to celebrate a boy’s 16th birthday. I drew upon what I know as a mom, and what my son is all about.
My son loves food (standing at 6 ft +) and loves our Italian heritage, so family, Italian Food and celebration all were things I chose. Lavishly live life out loud and see how to celebrate a boy’s 16th birthday.
How To Celebrate A Boy’s 16th Birthday
First You need to create invites, and that is what I did, take a look. I love getting creative when it comes to parties.mj-invitation-1
I took a few photos of my now camera shy 16-year-old and made a card invite. Now that was easy! I used photo paper and printed from home!
Planning The Details
Honestly, the toughest thing about Sweet 16 is when your son turns Sweet 16 because celebrations don’t seem to exist for boys. Already having survived the girl Sweet 16 themed party, I should have been a pro, but boys are different.
My son, is all about food, family, and celebrations, he loves getting together and his grandparents are his world.
When we head out, he requests Olive Garden because he loves the food there and this seemed like a perfect fit. I had everything covered from food to family so my son’s 16th birthday was set to go.
The plan of how to get MJ there was a bit more mapped out. Here is how I worked things and if you have a teen daughter I am sure you can relate.
It was simple to cause distraction as there is sure to be a ‘snafu’ with her schedule versus the family schedule. We built on that to naturally aggravate the situation and he never suspected she was picking up his other grandfather.
In planning, we simply told my son we were headed to dinner for his birthday, but his sister could not come. Hello to a bit of Italian temperament as he thought that his dad and me and his brother and sister would be together, and then she said, “No!”
The Olive Garden
I am so happy that we got to collaborate with Olive Garden for this amazing birthday party, as they made it possible to really deliver big on the smiles, and celebration.
Here was our very attentive and customer-service oriented staff that handled the entire night! Without great staff, there would not be a great party! (Ondrej (tl), Sean (tr), Tom (bl), Nate (br)
The Party Was A Success
My son was so happy with his grandparents and he and his Great Grandmother (94 y) have a special bond. (you can see them chatting!) I love this picture of everyone just smiling and carrying on with the night.
In the middle of the table, you can see the MJ that was all set up when we arrived, and the room looked spectacular. The party was effortless on my behalf! Yeah, Olive Garden Robinson!
16th Parties For Boys With Food
Growing boys consume lots of food and we consumed lots of food tonight as well.
On the very far left is Spaghetti Rosso with Chicken and Bacon. The middle photos are wine (of course with me around right? ). Thee infamous Olive Garden Family Salad with grated fresh cheese.
Please note there are no croutons as my son has severe food allergies (the youngest son) and the staff was so attentive to being allergen friendly.
On the right-hand side, top, Garlic Mussels Marinara and then this became a true initiation to the Italian Men Club in our family.
All three: Grandpa, Dad & MJ all enjoyed the appetizer together, and it was MJ’s First time.
MJ never digs into new foods, so this was a huge deal.
The party continued on all evening with family photos, gifts, fabulous fun and then an Olive Garden Dessert to even trump the cake….Dolcinis .
If you have not experienced these little dessert cups, make sure you do the next time you are into the Olive Garden. Dolcini is an individual sized layered cakes with mousse pastry cream. Check out the flavors here.
Happy 16th Birthday
