5 Unusual Mexico Airbnb Essentials To Pack
Your Airbnb awaits your stay in Mexico, but what to pack for a Mexico Airbnb may be the big question that you are pondering right now.
When we rented our Airbnb, we were surprised at the items that were not included, even more so than the ones that were. Therefore after the rental, we wanted to make sure you had a good list to work from.
Mexico is a blast if you have what you need and don’t need to waste time shopping for it or doing vacation without whatever you needed, cause that sucks!
While we term these “unusual essentials” on our packing list for an Airbnb in Mexico, you will find that the Mexico Airbnb essentials we are sharing could apply to any Airbnb stay, anywhere.
The Mexico Airbnb Packing List
The packing list for your Airbnb in Mexico is for before, during, and after your getaway because you’ll use some of the items for the duration of the trip, and they are a necessity because they are not in the Airbnb!
#1 Packing To Get There + The Aftermath of Vacation
This part of the packing list for your Airbnb in Mexico is Mexico Airbnb essentials!
Packing in your carry-on or larger luggage as much as possible is essential to comfort, but you need space.
Using compression bags may seem like unusual items for Airbnb stays in Mexico, but if you don’t have a washer and spend any time outside in the heat, water, and humidity, “Oh, mutha your dirty clothes gonna stank!”
These simple compression bags can be sealed, keep the stink out, and help you gain room in your luggage to pack more than enough undergarments, so you don’t have to turn them inside out or find a laundry place!
You have three choices in most cases regarding dirty laundry and your trip to Mexico.
- Purchase compression bags and toss the dirty clothes in there, and don’t worry about it
- find a place that does laundry
- Use a large trash bag, but that won’t help as much as you might think (moisture and clothing smell!)
👉 Water + Your Electronics
Speaking of wet and dirty laundry we have another pro tip you’ll love for wet water bags and do note this an an atypical item and one you would not even find in a hotel, but it is a must-bring Mexico water trip packing essential!
👉 For those of you bringing waterproof camera bags, where you will place your phone inside and use it while snorkeling or at the pool or beach, you will definitely want to use this tip because you won’t find these helpful items in your Mexico Airbnb.
Use the silica gel packets from shoes or packages, stash them, and when you go on your trip add this to your Mexico Airbnb packing list.
No worries you can buy the silica packets here as well if you don’t have any stashed!
Place them in your phone bag at the end of the day or even while the phone is in there to keep the moisture out and no fogging!
Still lost? See our photo below of the silica gel packet!
At the end of the day place a packet in your pouch to rid the potential water droplets from opening the phone waterproof pouch.
We also suggest stashing a few in your snorkel goggles bag so that you don’t have them moist when dropping them back in there and then fogging up (even though they will fog if you don’t have the anti fog spray with you!)

#2 Remote But Not! Not The Normal Mexico Airbnb Essentials, So Bring Them
Bring current converters (power) because when the Airbnb rental owner tells you there are converters for current, but there are not, you won’t be using your phone, laptop, iPad, or anything else you need to plug in gringo!
We suggest a few different kinds of power options:
- Travel battery charging blocks that last a few days after being fully charged (bring them charged when you travel)
- Power converters (inexpensive adapters that allow you to use your plug-in items in their electrical sockets)
- if you are flying on a plane, charge up everything you have that needs to be charged while in flight too!
Don’t expect your Mexico Airbnb to have current converters even if listed; chances are slim.
#3 “You Gotta Go” + Unusual Items For An Airbnb.
If you suddenly got relaxed and need to go vacation #2, here’s to hoping that as part of your Mexico Airbnb essentials, you packed tp; otherwise, you might be up “shits creek” literally!
Add toilet paper to your packing list for your Airbnb in Mexico, or head to the local Walmart and stock up so you can go poo on vacation with ease!
Many Mexico (and worldwide) Airbnb’s might give you a starter roll or a roll that the last guest did not entirely use, but if you are in the middle of a shitstorm, that is not going to wipe it up.
- Carry adults flushable wipes in your purse or travel backpack always and especially as part of what to pack for a Mexico Airbnb
- flushable
- sensitive skin (no matter what)
- hypoallergenic
- Paraben-Free
- Alcohol-Free
- With soothing aloe vera
It’s not just the Airbnb’s that won’t have tp either! We were sightseeing and had to go to the bathroom (and some of us were girls, not guys), and there was no toilet paper around, and our driver told us we had to bring your own or pay him for some (which he should have said BEFORE we took off toTinkleville!)
If you have to stop at the store before you get to your Mexico Airbnb to get the bare essentials, from paper towels to toilet paper.
#4 Don’t Drink The Faucet Water Unless You Love Diarrhea
Mexico is hot and humid, bright and sunny, and it is loaded with alcohol we all love, like Tequila, etc.
Dehydration happens worse than being in a desert after the perfect storm of a day out, on the beach and in the water, poolside, jumping to the DJ’s music while sipping on those Margaritas and cervezas.
Before you know it, your mouth is so dry, and you are so parched you go for the Sink! STOP!
There’s no filtration on those Airbnb rentals let alone anywhere else (hotels, hostels, etc.) that will make your water safe, and even the locals drink purified water that is NOT from the taps!
Pack filtration reusable water bottles (these are the ones we bought and love) and then take them everywhere you go, just like your ID.
You don’t need parasites or bacteria eating up the inside of your intestines and belly, so be smart, and order some online like these!
#5 A C02 Detector
Right at the top of your Mexico Airbnb packing list should be a C02 detector for travel that runs on a battery.
How many awful sad stories have we heard in the last few years about couples, families, and friends that have died because there were no CO2 detectors?
Portable CO2 detectors for travel are not expensive; run-on batteries are worth more than the price because they can save your life.
If you read your Airbnb contract (sorry, nerd girl here with a lawyer daughter), you’ll read that they suggest YOU bring your Own CO2 detector, and we agree.
- buy a new C02 detector before you go
- get fresh batteries
- bring backup batteries
- test the CO2 detector before you go
- Turn it on the minute you walk into your AirBNB rental.
